What is this on my rearview mirror?

I am new to MB and MBWorld. I just bought a 2011 C300 the other day. The next day I noticed this sticker on the rearview mirror and started to peel it off only to reveal what looks like circuits. Can someone tell me what this is and why it is on the outside of the mirror?

Thanks.

Pull the tape out, that’s the auto dark rear view mirror sensor.

Welcome to MBW

Thanks for the welcome and reply. I peeled the clear part off but the circuit tape under it stayed on the mirror. Does that come off as well?

maybe that's something the dealer forgot? Like a locator? I'd think the circuit tape is an antenna.

That or the feds are watching you!

I emailed my sales rep and this was his reply.

"That is a rfid tag. Our in house system use it when you arrive in the service department. You are welcome to remove it but it is very useful to us."

With RFID, dealer's reader reads in your car info when you drive through. Without it, they need to hand write it down.

I used to work in RFID field. Simplest RFID has antenna and an RFID chip attached to the antenna. Antenna could be spiral, rectangular, or any fancy shape.

Thanks, C300CA. I would like to remove it because it is a bit unsightly. Since you have experience with RFID, do you think it would still work if I peeled it off and put it on something I could lay on the dash when I go in for service? Anything that saves me time at the dealer is a good thing.

Yes, as long as you peel it off carefully, especially where you see a little square thing (the RFID chip) in the middle. Try not to bend it sharply.

You can stick it somewhere semi hidden. readable distance will be reduced if it's too close to metal.

Sorry I missed what you said. It's a good idea to not to stick it in your car, but something you can take it with you, like a small carton box, or other non-metal stuffs.

I pulled it off and stuck to a piece of card stock to use when I need service. Thanks for your help.
