We have a difference of opinion. Even though I also have DWS on our E for three seasons and a bit until winter really digs in, we change to WS60 for Michigan winters. Toronto and the surrounding area is not as moderate as Vancouver, and temps do drop quite a bit below 40F when even DWS compound starts to become too hard to provide good traction. Continental, themselves, describe them as suitable for light snow, but not ice.

Just received my Hankook icept evo from Discount Tire Direct. I went for the un-staggered. I am running 225/45/17 all the way around. I will keep you updated on how they do this winter. I live here in Utah and I want them on sooner than later.. I am more concerned with the ice here than the snow.

Should work great, but did you consider 16" wheel and winter tires for even greater winter performance, esp if you ski ?

I didn't want to buy 16' wheels and then buy tires. I would rather use the stock 17' and then use my new 19' during the summer.

I guess you are non-staggered?

This helps others respond to issues, like tires, part sales, etc. Thanx

Yes, I am running non-staggered. For the winter and snow it is better to get a narrower tire. I just got them mounted and they are great. Started to snow today, I might be able to try them out tomorrow.

I assume then you have ~stretched the 225/45/17 tires on the oem-type wider rear wheels.

Just keep side to side rotation with the winters, as the wide rear wheels would likely be trouble fitting up front.

BTW, please update your posted info, based on my post #55

2010 C300 4MATIC Sport
I live in Anchorage, Alaska. I have a '10 C300 4MATIC and I have Blizzaks (studless and staggered) on my wheels. The first half of the winter I rode on the stock tires but decided to invest in actual winter tires. I have no problems with the snow and ice. This winter has been one of the harshest winters. Even on the worse blizzard days driving up steep hills I have dont even sweat it but my car turns into a mini plow because it rides low. Now the only question left is, do you buy a summer set so you dont have to swap tires every season......??

Hope this helps.

I've decided to use the stock tires for this winter. I live in the city, and they do a great job to plow the snow, so far these tires are working very well. Thank you.

hello!! it's time for me to change tires on my C350. I currently have contiprocontact all season tires. Are the continental extreme contact dws better? I have to stick with continental and mercedes benz approved tires since I have the tire insurance option on my car. Vancouver tire prices are so expensive and I am thinking of getting it in bellingham. Anybody know any great stores and any problems installing out of your state?

Thanks

DWS are so much better than the original contiprocontact that it is hard to believe they came from the same company. DWS are probably the best all season tires for folks who won't change to winter tires. Get on tirerack.com and enter a Bellingham zip code, find one of the Tire Rack approved installers there, and have the tires shipped directly there. Drive down and let them do the swap and have a great ride home!

Please also note that it is not just the snow or ice that makes winter tire better than the all-seaon tire. As the temperature goes down, the rubber compound of an all season tire will harden as compared to a winter tire.
the swap requires labor and it's not cheap and it's twice a year

Depending where you buy the tires I've seen free winter/summer swaps for the lifetime of the tires.

c3500 4matic
My take on winter tires - I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and encounter all types of winter weather.

Summer/all season tires suck in winter conditions, even with 4matic. I keep my vehicles long enough to go through at least two sets of tires, so why not have one of those sets optimized for the winter conditions that I drive in for 1/3 -1/2 of the year. No extra cost there, because I’ll need tires anyway.

Winter rims are a must, it frees you from the grip of overbooked tire shops every fall and spring changeover - 1 hour max to swap mine over, on my schedule.

my C350 4matic came With 18s. Fine for summer, but 17s for the winter offer more sidewall to handle the inevitable late winter potholes. And 17” snows are cheaper than 18s. If 16” rims would fit over the brakes I’d use those, but they don’t.

I use steel rims on my vehicles for winter when I can ( couldn’t find any for the c350) - better suited for the potholes. Benz alloys are stronger than aftermarket ( I’ve bent a few aftermarket rims, never the Benz OEM rims), but much more expensive.

Bottom line, use winter tires in winter conditions. Or don’t drive in winter conditions.
