Squeaking Noise when turning steering wheel

Ive had a quick search of the forum for this problem and what I found confirmed what the garage told me;

Its the pressure relief valve that's making the noise. However I know that only a few things could cause the squeak:
-Oxygen mixing with the fluid
-particles in the liquid (although less likely)
-Valve wearing out

But when I asked the dealership garage to fix it, they said it was fine and didn't need to be fixed.

Is this correct, or are they hoping that it causes a bigger problem in a few months after my warranty finishes?
Also is this system covered under the service care plan? (I don't have a copy of mine anywhere )

Should be covered. Might be your power steering pully , mine was bent inward ... Started to squeak and than grind . Whatever it is have fixed now , it's your car and you when something is wrong . Don't let the dealer get away with b/s because their too lazy to find the problem .

Have the dealer put it in writing.
If you have another dealer close I would obtain a second opinion.
Open the bonnet , turn the wheel & check where the squeek is coming from. Could be the auxilliary belt which is an easy fix.
Mine was replaced while in warranty.

If the pressure relief valves shreak in the PS it is due to fluid aeration. Check fluid level. These cars are very critical on level. Reservoir is under RHS air inlet tube - pull tube off to access. Top up - turn steering from lock the lock 5 times to bleed/prime & check level again. Top up as necessary.

Observe temp & level on cap dipstick.

Thanks Glyn M Ruck - I had a look at the level and its at Max for 20 Degrees. Temperature outside when I did it was 10 Degrees.

Any other ideas?

The problem is friction, squeaky noise does not need changing part. (If the noise is just like rubbing plastic material under pressure especially close to end part of steering wheel's tour)

The problem is about the steering gear. NO NEED TO BE CHANGED. There is a rod btw the wheel and steering gear and a plastic cover to protect it from dust and water (not the axis).

Open it, you will see a rod under it and an O ring made of plastic surrounding it. GREASE IT. That's it..

I will put the picture for you to see.. The red arrows show the start and end point of plastic cover, and blue one shows the place TO BE OILED.

good luck

I am having a similar but different issue, my car is a 2011 C250, has 11,000 KMs on it, the symptom was while the steering wheel was turned over 90 degrees at low speed, there was a noise sounds like from a antler horn (that the best I can describe it) last for just a second, then gone. nothing changed on the steering feeling though, it happened only three times in two years,

I checked the power steering fluid level, it is good, as this is still a brand new car.

should I be worried?

Thanks!

Tomas

My steering rack and pinion was recently replaced because of a squeaking sound when turning the wheel. They probed the car using a micophone and localized the sound and found the noise coming from the main rack itself. After the replacement no more noise. It is a expensive repair as they have to do a bunch of adjustments after they replace the part.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but i'm having the same issue.

The pic you posted above is no longer valid - is there any chance you could upload the pic again?

I'm having the same squeak issue when turning wheel and would like to resolve - I have no idea how to access the area that you mention above.

Thanks

İ ve checked, picture is still valid.

To reach that part, follow the rod from wheel to the steering gear, remove plastic accordion, then you will see that part. Spray with WD40 or equivalent, its over.

İ heard that injecting oil into accordion is another way of solving the problem without removing the parts...

stupid solution

Also had this creaking and groaning sound on my newly bought 2008 320CDI. Tried to find the plastic cover and lube points in this link but did not succeed. seems like one has to remove the bottom panels? the fluid level was a bit low and I topped it up - no difference.
I jacked up the front and turned the steering side to side whilst listening carefully with the engine idling - and found the sound coming from inside the car.
The plastic under-dash panel above the steering column had come adrift...possibly during the valet before it was delivered to me. 5 seconds later I pressed it into place and the problem is gone!!

Hello khf88, would it be possible for you to post a picture where the plastic cover location is. Looking at the picture that you posted I can't tell exact where I should be looking to remove the cover. Is this cover inside the car under the steering?

Hey Guys,

So recently I have noticed a dull rubbing/grinding noise from my 09 C350 (73K Miles) steering, catch is it only happens once in the morning and the car is fine after that, no noise. I have explained the issue to the dealer and they replaced the sway bars (not long after they replaced the caster arms as well), but the noise still happens every morning (it also feels like something could be loose). Looking for any possibilities, I have extended warranty till 100K miles. Thanks in advance.

Can you explain where to find the plastic under-dash panel? I have a 2013 C250 and just recently started to get a whining sound that happens when I even slightly turn the steering wheel. I can't hear the sound from the outside and I've already topped off the PS fluid.

Could this noise not be coming from one of the rubber bushes on the front suspension as it gives the same noise when driving in a straight line over the slightest of bumps/uneven road surface..
