2012 c250 - turbo
I've read in other threads that turbocharged engines tend to be less reliable and in need for repairs after a few years?
Is this true? Any expert advise is appreciated...
Thanks.

Different brand. 2.4 liter. 5 cyliners. Turbo. 8 years 7 months. 112,900 miles. ZERO engine/turbo repairs. Let me repeat: NO engine or turbo repairs. YMMV.

Depends on car/model/etc but given that you are looking at a 2012 C250, I highly doubt you are going to have the car long enough for it to actually make that much of a difference in terms of reliability.

It depends. If you want to keep the car for the long term, you should expect the possibility of some issues. I say this because this engine has been used for a long time on the W203 models and proved to be a nightmare. Most of the problems have been fixed on this newer version of the engine, so I don't think it will be a nightmare anymore. Nevertheless, it's certainly the riskier option with regards to reliability compared to the V6.
I'm sure others will disagree, so just to summarize: it has proven to be a less reliable engine. Based on the history and the fact that there are more parts it should be statistically less reliable. Having said all of that, it's probably not a big deal and if you don't plan to keep the car for more than 4 years it is certainly not a concern!

since it is only the 12 c250s that got updated w/ a different engine config. i REALLY hope there will not be long term issues w/ the C's...having said that:
1. i actually do plan to keep the car for a long time. since the W204 models have only existed for ~4 yrs, i am interested to know if anyone w/ 2007 models have any issues...
2. i am new to the MB family, so i'd like to know how reliable the C's are and are there any issues I should "expect" if say i want to keep the car for >8 yrs???
3. is this one of the reasons ppl often lease MB's? Or ppl that drive MBs are seriously just rich that they just keep on leasing MBs when new model comes (no offense, seriously)? -- but then again, there is a HUGE market for used MBs too.....
4. so is it worth it to buy extended warranties then?

Can you purchase a genuine extension to your Benz Warranty or motorplan in the US like ROW? I know the Mobilodrive plan 6 years/120,000Km is not part of the purchase price there. If you can it is a no brainer.
That said the W204 has proven a very reliable vehicle.

what he said, the M271 eve engine has been known to not be the most dependable, some needing recall work done till this day.
A V6 one will be by experience and history a more dependable mill. Only time will tell, but I wouldn't want to run the risk on a 1st year engine in any mb

Remarkably smooth, peppy and fuel efficient, it’s an excellent choice for L.A.-area commuting.
Purely coincidental your posts were a topic of conversation. :)
Will it prove dead nuts reliable as the miles rack up? Who’s to say?
Upside is any powertrain issues will be covered under its MBUSA warranty.
edit:
^ yes Glyn, aftermarket (and factory/CPO) extended warranties are available to Yanks.
Mom bought one for her ~20,000-mile ’07 that just came off lease. $2750. I told her she worries too much!

Thanks for explaining warranty. I knew about aftermarket warrantees but have never quite understood the Benz extension system in the US.
Your Mom probably does worry too much especially with you to fall back on but at least she has some comfort should a major issue arise. In SA a 2 year extension after 6 years costs the price of a windscreen wiper motor to put it in perspective.

2012 C250
I bought 2012 c250 6 months ago. I've been to the dealership 3 times already for 2 different problems. 1st time it had "software issues". I guess they fixed that. Second time I brought it in they said I had something like a faulty air intake pressure manifold. 3rd time I took it to a different dealership and they said the problem that previous dealership supposedly fixed is back along with fuel pressure related issues. My car has been there for 2 weeks already and they're "waiting" on the engineers at Mercedes to respond with a solution. If they don't fix this soon I was told by some friends that there's a lemon law where I can get my money back or a new car. I'm so frustrated. This is my first Benz too...

Not one of those problems are related to the Engine itself. Its seems to be more bad luck than anything. To answer the question from the OP. Yes a Turbo engine does need more maintenance than a Non Turbo setup. Maintenance is the key for any Turbo setup, if you maintain it, the Turbo engine should have the same reliability as a Non Turbo setup.
Problems with new Turbo engines is not uncommon in fact almost expected, but the m271 has been around for years and that is a bonus, most of the issues and kinks have been worked out. I would not hesitate in a second over the new C250 the engine at this point been worked out, it is much more refined than other 4 cylinders turbos on the market.

The single biggest weakness on the M271 series of engines is the single gang timing chain. It stretches & jumps on the cam sprockets & bends valves. If you ever hear a rattle from the front of the engine on startup that shuts up as soon as the oil pressure comes up. Stop use & pull a new chain.

Have had 170K miles each on four different turbo Saabs (one w/o a water cooled turbo bearing) and all have had zero mechanical problems.I would assume the Germans could build an engine equally as good as the Neighbors up North. My WW2 airplane with a P&W R1340 AN1 with a supercharger has been working fine for the last 70 years (with a few helpful overhauls).By the way my 2011 C300 4matic ,SA built, has has zero-none- defects this past 12000 miles.Follow the oil change interval and use only the MB spec oil and your turbo will be fine...

c250 turbo replacement
Hello, I have a 2012 c250 with 29k miles. I took it in for an alignment and they said the turbo was leaking oil and needed replaced. It's under warranty, but also a $2500 job. Just wondering if anyone else had this happen? I hate having the engine tore apart...

While the m271 was in the w203s, almost none of the internals cross over, the design is similar, hence the 271 designation, but it isn't fair to compare the cgi engines with the older models

'12 C250 Iridium Coupe at 25k miles - - - CPO with one year extension of factory 4 year/50,000 warranty: averaging 30 MPG; no issues to date.
Some well-heeled dude paid circa $45 grand for this really beautiful coupe.
Me? I graduated from San Jose State (not Princeton). 2/3 of $45,000 buys a lot of Crown Royal.
Seriously, the car appears jewel-like to this sailor.
