Finally A True "tiptronic" for Automatics

Well, as many of you may or may not know, our cars do not have a true "tiptronic" or manual shift system. The most we can do is specify which gear we will allow the transmission to shift up until (set a maximum gear, such as, can't go higher than gear 4). But the transmission is still free to select whichever gear it wants from 1-4.

Well, apparently, "this year" Mercedes is going to introduce a E/S/M button on all mercedes models, so that when it is placed in "M" manual mode, you will have full operation of the transmission, so that it will be in whichever gear you specify. Finally this will solve weird/rough experienced when trying to manually shift in the vehicles with automatic now.

If a tuner could create a plug and play module to allow this for past models or a tcu override thatd be "clutch" lol

According to the owner's manual for 2012 C-class cars on page 147, "The manual drive program is only available for vehicles with the dynamic handling package and for AMG vehicles." My 2012 C250, which doesn't have the dynamic handling/advanced agility package, only has a E/S button; no M mode.

I have a 2011 C350 that I specifically ordered w dynamic handling package and the paddle shifters. It isnt true tiptronic, none are. U cant leave it in 4th and start out like that. It will try to then it downs it to 2nd gear, ive tried it. Otherwise it does hold the gear 90% of the time, you can be going 45mph in 7th and dog the gas and get the exhaust to bog and it wont downshift. If you floor it the tranny drops usually 1 gear to help it along. The new ones do the same thing test drove a 300 on the dealers lot 2wd 2012

I'm not sure what you mean by "true Tiptronic".

Who was the first manufacturer to introduce Tiptronic? What model year? How did it work?

Many people (erroneously) use the term 'tiptronic' to refer generically to any type of torque converter automatic transmission that incorporates a manual upshift/downshift feature.

@ RLE - Tiptronic is a term that I believe is trademarked by Porsche (not sure if they still hold exclusivity to it). And yes, tiptronic is commonly used to describe a "manumatic" operation, although, I don't really think it is erroneous comparison, as your wikipedia copy and paste would suggest, as tiptronic is a manumatic system...

Thats like saying its erroneous to refer to a mercedes when speaking about a luxury car.

Anyways, the "TouchShift" system in mercedes is a rudimentary manumatic system. The new 2013 iterations with the E/S/M functions will provide for an experience that is as close as you can get to true manual shift in an automatic.

Its interesting to know that some cars with the special package have this already - I did not know that. Perhaps it will be the same, or different? Anyways, there will always be some limitations in the manumatic system, as it is an automatic and certain conditions could cause the car to stall. But the point of this is, that mercedes is improving their TouchShift system to be less limited and primitive and more like a manual.

Indeed - "Tiptronic" has become generic like, Vaseline, Google, Hoover etc. I guess that's brand strength for you.

The good thing is that Benz is more & more listening to their customers.
