Finally A True "tiptronic" for Automatics
Well, apparently, "this year" Mercedes is going to introduce a E/S/M button on all mercedes models, so that when it is placed in "M" manual mode, you will have full operation of the transmission, so that it will be in whichever gear you specify. Finally this will solve weird/rough experienced when trying to manually shift in the vehicles with automatic now.

Who was the first manufacturer to introduce Tiptronic? What model year? How did it work?
Many people (erroneously) use the term 'tiptronic' to refer generically to any type of torque converter automatic transmission that incorporates a manual upshift/downshift feature.

Thats like saying its erroneous to refer to a mercedes when speaking about a luxury car.
Anyways, the "TouchShift" system in mercedes is a rudimentary manumatic system. The new 2013 iterations with the E/S/M functions will provide for an experience that is as close as you can get to true manual shift in an automatic.
Its interesting to know that some cars with the special package have this already - I did not know that. Perhaps it will be the same, or different? Anyways, there will always be some limitations in the manumatic system, as it is an automatic and certain conditions could cause the car to stall. But the point of this is, that mercedes is improving their TouchShift system to be less limited and primitive and more like a manual.
