Comand knob problem
Either way it still beats the $450 price tag my shop was asking...
So for you, it was as simple as buying the part and re-plugging it in basically? Then full functionality came back?
Thanks
Mercedes Benz had no suggestions as to how to repair it. I have an extended warranty with the car, but, don't know whether it would cover this?
I've solved the problem with the comand knob.
It's not an easy fix, but it's doable

Best,
Robert.

You'd think they'd at least quietly offer the part for a reasonable price if they won't admit and own up to the control being failure prone. Few would complain or even mention the problem if it were a $50 part.
Maybe I just have too much faith in companies having the integrity to stand behind their products beyond that magical warranty cut off where they suddenly become your enemy instead of your friend. They should realize today's MB owners, warranty or not, are tomorrow's MB purchasers when it comes time to replace or upgrade.
Also, any idea where I can find an Item# 2048704890
iPod interface kit? Apparently they are sold out in Germany (MB).
Thank you for any response. I appreciate it.
Cost was $203, online price was $190, $13 bucks was worth getting it immediately. Original price at the dealer was $226, but I asked for a discount and the guy behind the counter gave it. Looks like I caught him on a good day.
All in all about 30 minutes if you have the tools (torx drivers, composite pry tools, etc.) and you follow this guide, even faster if you just cut the cable to the old switch unit.
As for designed to fail, I doubt it, more like poor materials and sub par design. MB does not make the part, its made under contract from whoever came in cheapest at the time that they were needed, and purchased in serious bulk quantities.
They are also probably used about the same amount by everyone who daily drives their vehicles, which means the time to wear the parts out is going to be the same.

MB should provide some sort of explanation to us customers, these are not $100 toys; after your house, your car can be the 2nd largest investment in your life.
