Off topic New 7 speed DCT transmission A Class

Not the right place , but some info.

The new A Class will be coming this year in Europe with a 7 speed Duall clutch transmission. (www.mercedes-benz.nl)

They are coming with an A250 sport with 211 hp , 350nm and a 1991 ccm turbo engine.

This engine is developed with AMG.

Think the DCT Will come soon in the C class as wel.

That would be awesome. Am I correct when I say the SLS is the only other Merc right now with a double clutch? I guess the one in the A is a non amg version, but it must have the same base.

Who makes it? If it's a Borg/Warner design and licensed to MB, like VAG's DSG-DCT and/or NISSAN's GT-R design, then Mercedes is in trouble. BW DCT's suck.

The Mechatronic (Unit) Module is the weak link. The hydraulic solenoids fail, sometimes straight out of the box. We own both. The DSG in our 2009 Jetta Wolfie was so bad, VW bought the car back from us without loss, then proceeded to recall over 500,000 cars in the USA and Canada. It was a logistical nightmare since these MU are VIN specific, meaning it took up to three months for a replacement MU to show up at the shop in most cases. The GT-R suffered severe issues forcing Nissan to drop the LC setting.

According to one of the Geneva show's A Class launch reports I read it is Benz own DCT. It will be offered in the W205.

EDIT: If it is made by Getrag it will be tough!

The trans MB uses is not a true double clutch trans such as Porsche (the original inventor) uses.

Do you know if the Ferrari 458 uses a true double clutch?

The original inventor of the double clutch transmission was Adolphe Kégresse of halftrack fame in 1939. Original commercial implementation was the Citroen Traction Avant ultimately abandoned due to reliability issues.

Porsche/Audi picked up the concept for race cars in the mid 1980's. Porche later commercialised it as the PDK. We all know the rest.

Well, that's not exactly what you found on Wikipedia but you might have added that Kegresse never even built a working prototype. And it's Porsche even though Wiki misspelled it, you should know better.

Fact was, Porsche gave up on it for production because theirs was all mechanical and only went back to it when suitable electronics came on the scene. Audi was not involved.

I did not consult wiki - Citroen built the first operating unit. Audi used a version of the DCT in a rally Quattro.

Excuse the mispelling of Porsche - typo.

This would be great in the C-Class, my VW DSG is a blast to drive. Although it had issues with mechatronics unit mine never did (pretty sure it was fixed after initial troubles).

The new Boxster S PDK is a pleasure to drive & 12 secs quicker around Nürburgring Nordschleife than the previous model.

CAR magazine (UK) just published a 3-way comparison between the new Boxster S, the M3 and the SLK55 V-8.

The Boxster outhandled both of the others and the SLK despite it's power was an evil handling SOB at the limit.

Boxster S was judged #1. No surprise there. Wish I had maybe 85 grand to buy one. Of course that's pocket money compared to the 991. My friend Al is waiting for his 991 and with a moderate load of options it's going to demolish $120K when all is said and done.

Yes - Porsche SA kindly invited me to the launch of it's new models. The Boxster S is supposed to compete here with the likes of SLK, BMW Z4 & Nissan 370Z. In reality there is no comparison. The Boxster S is in a class of it's own. I loved driving it. It's so poised & so much fun and that vector steering arrangement of braking the inside rear wheel in cornering really works.

I love the mini Carrera GT looks, bigger wheels dropped into deeper wheel arches etc.

From a balance perspective etc. it could be the best car Porsche makes.

Nice to see that fellow MB fans are Porsche fans as well. They are such great cars, my dads got a 997S, that thing is such a blast to drive. Benz, Porsche and Ferrari are my three and only favorite manufacturers

And it is true about the boxster and how balanced it is. If it werent for the 911 and the Boxster was their flagship it would probably be overall even better. At the same time its cool to be able to get a mid engined roadster at a relatively low price. Although $85000? I though they were more around $60000?

The price rises very quickly as you upspec them.

The base model is $72500 in SA.

My memory failed me when I said the M3 was in this comparison test when it was the Z4 which makes more sense.

Here's a link to the article.
