Looking for Winter Tires... Recommendations?

Hi guys,

I did a quick search and I wasn't able to find this.. I have a 2012 C-350 and I am wondering what would you guys recommend for winter tires? I live in Canada and the snow here is pretty thick.

Should I stick with 18"? 17" (which is the one I am leaning towards to)? Or go all the way down to 16"?

For the size you recommend what tire should I go with? (The thickness is the one I am after) I see different recommendations from different tire sites.

Thanks in advance.

Which online tire place will have the best prices for the Nokians?

I live in Calgary as well. Just got a set of 18 inch amg rims with a set of Pirelli Sottozero off a previous AMG owner. I'm going to try it out and see how it goes. But I heard 17 inch with narrower width is better for the winter.

Not sure for Canadian tire online vendors? Maybe some of your countrymen will chime in. Discount tire is my go to place here in the states, not sure if they ship to Canada.

Wow, so many Calgarians. I live in Calgary as well. I heard good things about Nokians and I was doing some searches for those tires just moments ago. Can't find any deals yet. I had a set of Firestone put in by Car Salon a few years back and I liked the Firestone. I think Firestone is a sub-brand from Bridgestone?

I might give Nokian a try this round. My friend also recommended kxwheels .com for online orders because he had good experiences with them. Any more local/Canadian stores somebody can recommend?

I think 17" is what I am sticking with for this car because the 18's look kinda tight for snow.

I think only Kal tire is the only local place that has Nokians. It's probably around 1600-2000 for the Nokians.

I don't know the economics of buying tires in Canada, but for product quality and performance in the winter, the clear two top choices are Blizzak WS70 and Michelin X-Ice xi3. Find either of those where you can!

Is it necessary to get the run flats though?

You have a minispare in the car already, so why are you concerned about run flats...the car doesn't have them as original equipment? I suggest mounting them on their own low cost set of rims so the annual swap is a quick 20 lugnut removal.

This helps a lot but my original question was.... 18" or 17" or whichever one is cheaper? I can feel the bumpiness going with the 18"...

Thank you guys for the input. I will check out more local shops.

The question is 16" or 17", depending on what fits over your calipers. 16" is better, if possible. 18" should be out of the question, given their typical widths. Even if 17, go narrower than the OE size and look for 215/50-17, which WS70 does offer. Even if you are staggered now, get them the same size front and rear on low cost rims. In the winter, narrower wins! To assure yourself of the fit, visit 1010tires.com and plug in the OE size and this size into the calculator and see how similar they are for diameter and rotation.

I have the same car and live in Toronto. Picking up Toyo Garit KX in a 225/45/17 next week on MBR-1 (repilcas). Going back to Toyo as my last set (Weathermaster) was disappointing.

If it's not too late to change, you may want to reconsider based on this thread. That tire is a so-called "performance winter" tire, a bit of any oxymoron which usually results in being great at neither capability. You should be looking at the "studless winter" category for better performance in your climate. Those tires are designed to approach the level of studded tire performance, but without studs. The Blizzaks and Michelins mentioned above are both studless winter tires.

That size is also wider than optimal for winter.

Thanks again for the input. Here is the thing I didn't understand (sorry, I am new to this). I went to 1010tires.com and inputted my C350 saying it came with 225/45R17 and the site suggested a tire with Nokian 225/60R16 XL. I notice the thickness is thicker. But it is R16, so does this mean it goes with a 16" wheel but the outter diameter is the same as a tire that is 225/45R17 with a 17" wheel?

Thanks again for taking your time to answer this newbie question.

225 is the treadwidth and the 45 or 60 is the percentage of the width which defines the height of the sidewall. So, 60% of 225 would be a taller sidewall than 45% of 225. The reason you can have a taller sidewall is that the wheel in the middle has a smaller diameter by one inch, going from 17" to 16". The wheel shrinkage is made up for with the taller sidewall of the tire. It is unlikely that the overall diameter is identical, but the calculator should show you that it's very close. They recommend no more than (I recall) 6% variance, but they also show what a real 60mph on original tire sizes will produce. A real 60 showing as 59 should not be an issue and it will also log fewer miles on the odometer. A real 60 showing as 61 will be the reverse.

16s won't fit over the front discs on my C300 Lux which I think has smaller discs than the Sport.

Personal experience. And my Nokian WRG2s aren't squirmy in the wet & on dry pavement like my former 16" Blizzaks.

I just called into the dealer and they confirmed 16" won't fit because the Sport Package's break disk is too big for that. I guess that's 17" I am going for then.

Dealer said I need P225/45R17 but on tire size calculator, it said P215/45R17 and P215/50R17 are both within 1.5% of the speed difference. Am I safe with either of those 2 alternatives or do I have to stick with P225/45R17?

The dealer also told me that the TPMS is built into the speed sensing so I don't need another set of TPMS for my new set of wheels+tires. Can somebody else confirm this?

What dealer told me is contradicting with this post here made about a year ago: https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...50-4matic.html

Some Canadian cars can take 16"...some can't. You've resolved that issue.

The dealer only knows and will recite OE specs. Don't worry about that. You can do other sizes which are within a close spec and fit your wheels, per the 1010tire calculator. I did not run the numbers, but would think the 215/50 was the closer fit.

Canadian cars don't use TPMS sensors, as I recall. They use wheel rotational speed to assess pressure variance through the ABS wheel speed sensor.

I can confirm the quote above. If you are not going Nokian, 3Ds are probably best choice. Blizzaks are pretty good. I would not go with low profile for winter because winter tires should be soft and those low walls do not make tires any softer and you risk of damaging the rim...
Give me a call and I'll give you some choices.

Igor.

First of all, there is no such thing as good deal on Nokians as distribution in Canada is very limited and those are quite pricey (it is like getting a deal on brand new Aston Martin). Second, I wonder how many winters can you drive on those before damaging the rim. I mean driving, not 20km per day...
For the record, I do agree that these are one of the best winter tires on the market, but not in that size - this is probably why you got a deal.

Igor.
