Should a rip in armrest of the door panel be under warranty?

Folks,

I have a small rip in the armrest of the driver side door panel (see the attached pictures). The dealer said it is not covered under the warranty. I also spoke to the mercedes rep from MB head office in Toronto and he told me the same. Rather than trying to determine whether this is a defect of the material, they focused on how the rip was made. The car is driven by me only and I really can't see the force of closing the door could cause this rip. I wear a wedding band with rounded edges but it is not sharp enough to cause the rip.

Anyway, I want to see you opinion about this. Should this be covered under the warranty? What do you think?

ps. the car only 7 months old

Dennis

Usually rips and tears are only covered if it has been pulling away at a seam.

This should be a cheap easy quick repair for a mobile upholstery repair.

Not covered. If this was an assembly defect or damage prior to delivery, it would have been noticed before 7 months, and covered. If this was a part defect, it would not be the traumatic tear we see in the photo. Something ripped the material; it was not a material defect. The dealer and MB have no way to know the actual cause, but they reasonably can rule out an inherent part failure. Beyond that, what actually happened is speculation.

Correct.

Every dealer has people that come around on a regular basis to repair damage like yours, remove small dents and touch up paint defects on trade-ins.

Just ask the dealer when the upholstery guy will be in next time and pay him direct. It's an easy fix.

Do not do this through the dealer because they will add their markup.

Of course this should not be covered under warranty. It would only cost you $40-50 to get it professionally fixed.

Put a drop of superglue under the rip, hold for 30 seconds and forget about it. $3.00 fix.

Mine was covered at my dealer. They said that it should not happen in the 2 years i owned the car. My interior door panel literally started splitting.

From your description, the situations are different. His photography clearly shows some type of impact. If you are having a material failure which results in a split, it should be covered.
