Transmission Service without Torque Converter

Transmission Service without Torque Converter
I asked MB dealers about a transmission service and they said they don't include the torque converter. If they do, they will charge more for that. Is that true? How much do you pay for a transmission service? What should I do? Should I just have them do the transmission service without the torque converter? You advice is appreciated. I am in SF Bay Area

I have the same question.
Also, my SA said you don't need to do the torque converter because MBUSA would recommend it if it was needed. I told my SA that there should be a drain plug and the SA said "I'm not sure if there is a drain plug and if there is or isn't I'm not sure if my tech's even have the right tools to do the torque converter"
geesh...what is the deal? These forums say do the torque converter and I have an SA that gives me that kind of response.

That's wrong, there are threads on this in regards to the 7g tranny. They are supposed to drain the tq converter. There was a bulletin out on it. If you have the 5g like me though than that's a different story.

Sounds like many need to find a MB dealer that gives honest and competent service. All the transmission service manuals for the 7G clearly state that draining and refilling the torque convertor is absolutely necessary as part of the procedure of this 39k mile service.

There are a number of threads in this regard. Download the latest WIS document on the 722.9 service sticky & put it in front of your dealer's nose. The TC holds nearly half of the fluid charge so not changing it is like putting crap in your icecream. Mixing old fluid with new fluid catalyses oxidation in the new fluid.

Yes, its correct, Torque converter nut should be remove in order to drain all tranny fluid.
I recommend to do by yourself or change tranny oil at another place instead of MBUSA. I change my tranny oil since 4 speed, 5g, and 7G will be next. Every benz I did, it need to remove Torque converter nut except those mechanic never fix benz. They don't know.
I am so curious how come MB dealer didn't know that it has no need to do this. How MBUSA training them?

The 5G stresses it's fluid far less than the 7G due to making less changes. TC drain plug was deleted from the 722.6 in 1999 rather stupidly. Proper 5G services after that were achieved by flushing the TC out via the cooler lines. I put the procedure in the W203 Wiki.

Whatever. A complete fluid change should always include the TC for long & reliable service.

Of course we all know we need to do the torque converter. The problem is most dealers are not up to date or for whatever reason won't do it. I guess the only way is to print it out and show it to them. But I hate making people feel ignorant.
