Interesting strategy...exterior of an S Class (for better or worse) and interior inspired by CLA (ditto). Would be interesting to read the target prospect definition. I imagine appreciation for the exterior correlates for liking softer vs crisper design language. If one can put aside new vs old, I strongly prefer the 204.

To be more accurate, displayed is the W205 model, the model will be presented autumn 2014 but will most likely not ship until fall the same year, and with September as switch month for year models the shipped 205.s will most likely be early 2015 models.

While I like the look of the car I completely agree with this. Even the upcoming Audi A3 hides it away. My only additional comment is I drove a new 3 series and after a short period you don't notice it so much. We'll see if it's a show stopper after seeing it in the flesh but i agree it tends to ruin an otherwise very nice interior.

Having driven the new S500 & S400 Hybrid on Friday the W205 externally really is a baby S Class although the larger car carries the lines better IMHO. In our country the softer more organic lines will be appreciated. While W204 has sold very well here it's styling was never as well received as the W203.
We are not going to start another pro/anti screen thread, we already have one & possibly S Class type screen integration might well happen at facelift time, who knows. It does not bother me.
One thing you soon learn driving the S Class is that having a stowable screen makes no sense. The screen is needed continuously as all functions right down to seat adjustments are carried by the screen. It's become part of the user interface rather than the Nav screen.
The S Class, that even carries it's faux main instruments on a TFT screen in front of the driver uses the "Nav" screen to shunt some info to when placing functions like the night vision camera (which is stunning) in front of the driver.
EDIT: I also happen to think that the W205 looks better with the classic Benz grill & hoodstar. Then it truly looks like a baby S Class & I like the new S Class.

Nice in terms of it's exterior and interior styling. The 9 speed auto will also be interesting to experience. Like the others said the navi screen looks aftermarket and the C Class' competitor, the BMW 3 Series F30, does a better job of making a nice flowing control layout that looks factory. I do like the C Classes more though as a whole and as long as this car rides solid and comfortable, is quiet, has a refined powertrain and the overall quality is good then it will be amazing.

I like what I'm seeing (aside from the unfortunate rear fender airscoops). I very much like the the styling of the w204, but I think the w205 will also be handsome. I thought the w203 had horrible detailing, esp the "melted" headlight look.
I've also seen the new w222 driving away from me. Silhouette is very similar to the w221, but the car looks a bit wider and a bit lower.
Also very interesting to see how pricing (esp options packages) work out on the car. Planning to get a w205 for the MY 2017, so hopefully they'll have all the bugs worked out by then!

I don't mind the free standing nav screen that much, Audi is even starting to have this kind of screen even on their high end models. I much prefer this than some dashes which has an inelegant hump to accommodate the screen. The rest of the interior looks very nice.
I have some minor beefs:
- The hood cut line is much higher than the headlights and grille opening, which creates an unsightly line across the front.
- The top of the rear window is rounded which doesn't integrate well with the lines and width of the panorama roof.
- The fake vent cutouts behind the rear windows look very weak and almost pointless in its design. The larger and more aggressive fake vents on the CLA looks more convincing.
- I don't know why MB is switching to a column-mounted shifter on all its models except for the AMG models. I drove one with it and it is rather awkward and not as intuitive to use. The front console looks a bit naked without a shifter. I wonder if it will have any kind of manu-matic shifting.
- The exterior design in general is not as stylish or aggressive as the CLA. It looks almost like a bland cross between the CLA, E- and S-class.

C300 Sport/Palladium Silver on Black/P2
In person, I think the interior is what is going to feel more premium/luxury than W204, but I could be wrong. In photos, I like interior a lot.
Exterior is fine. It seems somewhat subtle for Mercedes though, just a heavy evolution than completely revolutionary on exterior. The W204 & W205 must be slightly more related/evolved compared to W203 to the W204?

Shifter
I believe that they are likely to fit the S Class type stalk. Things like the light switch are lifted direct from the S Class. This is not a column shifter in the traditional sense. There is no mechanical linkage to the transmission like the old shifters. It is purely an electronic mode stalk for selecting different driving modes & you push in the end of the stalk to select Park. Most other functions are automated such as e brake release & application & hill holder application. The car does that for you. All you have to do is accelerate & brake ~ if you have active Distronic you dont even have to brake if you don't want to. You have paddle shifters behind the wheel to manually overide the transmission should you wish. No more E & S mode or C & S mode buttons etc. It is all integrated with one very simple stalk. With brief familiarisation it works very well.

Absolutely correct and one of the most depressing assessments of the future of driving.

Agreed. The rear on this new C makes the whole car look bloated. Let's hope it looks better in person, bot so far I'm not a fan of what I'm seeing in the photos. I think I like the looks of CLA a lot better.
