You installed a used face-lift clock-spring, I gather. They are a problematic thing to get right . I note from your profile that you drive a C350 sport. Looking at your picture it doesn’t look like it’s a wagon. From the close up photo of your steering wheel it, looks like you have a clockspring that incorporates the wiper speed adjuster for a rear wiper that is found on most wagons. That may have something to do with the issues that you are encountering. I doubt that it's compatible with your vehicle. The updated clockspring that you need has to be compatible with the options your vehicle has. I bought a new clockspring from Cars45.com and installed it to my pre-facelift with a Flat Bottom W205 steering wheel. No issues what so ever. I think that is the way to go so that avoid all the problems you have encountered thus far and have no issue down the track. Just my 2 cents worth.
I think the problem is my clock spring, I think that's why my paddle shifts don't work. This guy has the same steering wheel I own, but the clock spring is different and for him with that one, paddle shift works...
Paddle shifters would have to be programmed.
It was on by default with older models regardless of whether you had them or not from what I've read.
Does anyone know if a 2015 B250 steering wheel will work in a 2012 E550 4matic? Do I need the steering column as well if so? My current wheel is the 4 spokes one.
I am seriously confused. There is so many different options shown for this wheel swap...I've read people used c63..clc wheels (face-lift) now reading an e class steering column in this thread. Which car is your steering wheel from? I have 2009 w204 1.8 petrol and really want to upgrade the steering wheel. Just want to make sure I have all the right parts etc before going ahead without having to return parts back etc. I feel the hack with the chip sensor swap will defo make all the functions on the wheel work. But this video has confused me even more:
if link does not work type in YouTube: attempted to upgrade my mercedes benz steering wheel fail. I am based in the UK and want to get this sorted ASAP....can I not just buy a 2013 c class steering wheel with the airbag that comes with it....but than need to change the steering column to an e class one???
Thanks for reading everyone! Someone please help me 😆
QUOTE=Sappo569;6806784]Nice write up, and that gives us the complete wheel swap info I believe.
Combined with all the other info from us who took the leap before, anyone should be able to perform this.
Just be aware to anyone considering this, there is no going back, you end up hacking / modifying too much of the old steering wheel bits to revert.[/QUOTE]
QUOTE=Flyingbadgers;7314351]Well yesterday I received the upper steering column (clock spring) in the mail and today I went and installed it. I got everything together and ka-boom my airbag went off! No, I'm just kidding. EVERYTHING WORKS!!! Even the paddle shifters, which I wasn't expecting to work at all! Chris the Swede, you were right! Everything works as advertised! I am one happy customer! If you come to the USA Chris I will buy you a beer. Who'd would of thought that one simple piece of the puzzle would fix it all? For me, I thought I was throwing my money away on a mod that wasn't going to work. But now, put me down as a success story for this mod. To recap, all my functions on the steering wheel works, to include the horn.
Had a 2011 C300 4Matic steering wheel with no paddle shift.
Replaced with 2013-15 steering wheel with paddle shift and a 2012-2015 upper steering column (clock spring).

Did you need to do any chip swaps? Also did you get the complete wheel with air bag. And finally which model of steering column did you get it....was it all plug and play? I'm based in the UK and I really need help with getting this to work....

No, not in general. But wheels with red stiches came with 204 my13 the first time. And with my13 the new column came. The my13 column is unable to comunicate with pre facelift CAN and LIN. Just three AMG pack facelift wheels my12 are working in pre facelift. A172 460 2703 w/ paddles, 2803 w/ paddles w/ vibration, 2903 w/o paddles.
These wheels work with the pre facelift column. The facelift column my12 is only responsible for making the illumination of the knobs work. Need to know the Extras (memory/cruise control) of your Sedan and I can give you the part no of the facelift column.
Does that mean no rewiring and plug and play if you get one the above. I have a 2009 w204 with no contact plate on ny steering wheel...just ordered a new wheel from 2014 w204 coupe...so not sure if I need to do some rewiring and putting the old chip on the new wheel....
wow, how u make it? i'm facing the problem of fitting, try thounsand times already still cannot work
I'm about to do the same I have the same old wheel as you on my 2009...please share the love and help me please...can you PM please thank you in advance
19) Now there's two plugs on the old chip with yellow wires. You'll need to hack these plugs up a little bit in order to get your horn to work. The first thing you need to do is get a little super thin flat head screwdriver and push down on the metal pieces on the opening of the plug:
After you push it down on one side, flip the plug over and push down on the metal on the center opening on the other side as well.
If done correctly, the plug will just slide off and look like this:
20) After you remove the yellow wires from the plug, here's what you can do to avoid having to do any soldering. Take a needle nose plier and flatten the metal ends like this:
You should end up with these flaps. Just cut the flaps off with some wire cutters.
21) Once you cut off the flaps, you can take the needle nose plier and crimp the metal ends in half to make it look like this:
22) Make sure each of your yellow wires with the modified ends can plug into this slot here:
23) Now you wire up the yellow wires like so:
24) After you hook up the yellow wires, fold them over 90 degrees and make sure they don't touch each other. I put electrical tape over them to make sure they stayed in place.
25) Now, plug the control chip into the black plastic backing piece. I popped off some of the paddle shifter wiring to make sure it connects to my control chip, but I douldn't figure out how to get the paddle shifters working, so I gave up. Maybe someone can figure this out later.
I ended up using more electrical tape to cover the control chip because the cap won't fit back on. It's not a big deal since you'll pin it between the steering wheel once you screw it down anyways:
26) After that, you can re-assemble everything back. Put the black plastic piece back on the steering wheel and assemble it with the pressure plate. Make sure you run all the plugs and wires through the middle. You don't want any wires between the pressure plate because you need it to spring up and down for the horn to work. And don't forget to screw the brown ground wire back on as well.
27) Now you're ready to put the chrome bezel back. The two black plugs will need to be plugged back. Please make sure that you plug the black plugs back into the right spot. These plugs have to criss cross each other when you connect them. I made the mistake of not doing this, and none of the controls worked.
Also note that one side will plug right in, while the other side, you'll have to cut off the bump on it to make it plug in.
28) Lastly, put everything back and test out to see if everything works. Make sure you disconnect the battery each time before you remove the air bag. Also, don't tighten everything down until you make sure that your wiring works.
29) Pro-tip, make sure you tighten the negative on your car battery very well before turning on your car to test the steering wheel. I made the mistake of not tightening it well and thought my battery died lol. Just kidding, this is not a pro-tip, I was just not thinking straight.
The End:
wow amazing breakdown....can you please PM and help me....I've ordered my new wheel and will have to do this chip swap....can I send the chips to you for to swap
He just replace the steering column to one that works with that whjeel. Then you dont need anything else.

Hi everyone after back and fourth in different threads the wheel finally works. I ordered a 2014 w204 c class coupe steering wheel to go on my 2009 w204 saloon. Everything works...I had to take it to an independent mercedes specialist in Birmingham. They are called MSL performance, Birmingham. PAVEL is the guy who changed the stuff over, he had to do a chip swap for everything to work....I showed him the images of someone in this thread who did the chip swap but he said the information was incorrect. Anyway paddlshufters, airbag, buttons etc everything works...if u have patience I would definitely reccomend it. PM if you need any help W204 steering wheel upgrade
WHOO HOO! Just finished my FL Steering Wheel swap. Thank you to everybody who contributed to this thread. I'll post up my process so that it'll help someone else as well.
Thank you very much for the tips, I also installed a steering wheel from 2012 in my 2007 c-class.
it worked through the instructions.
However, I soldered the cables for the horn function directly to the plate
Regards from Germany
