229.5 vs 229.3 motor oil

You must use 229.51 ~ if you use 229.31 you must halve the drain interval. 229.31 is becoming obsolete.

Whats the drain interval for 229.31 and for 229.51 , any idea about the main difference between genuine mercedes oil 229.31 and mobil 1 5w30 229.31 .
My mercedes seller sells only genuine 229.31 and asked me what is 229.51

Drain interval depends on market & severity. Just listen to the car's Assyst. Most markets for your car are 20,000Km with 229.51.
229.51 is a far more modern formulation for extended drain. It offers better protection. The 229.51 approved products list is substantial & you will have no trouble finding it especially in Europe.

You can set your oil type in the menu between 229.31 lowest spec permissible & 229.51 highest spec product. The Assyst will adjust your drain interval accordingly.
I have plenty of experience with 229.51. I come from a major multinational oil company. See my profile.
The 229.51 product is the best you can use for your car. The cars have come with 229.51 new from factory for many years now.
The major difference with 229.51 is superior engine & emissions system protection. That is why you can leave it in for longer.

There is genuine 229.51 available at any dealership.
You should have no trouble finding 229.51 approved products from the long list in Europe. All approved products are good.
EDIT: You should be able to change oil type when you reset the service indicator.

Both those German sellers are selling genuine approved 5W-30.
Your dealers are ignorant.
Mobil 1 229.51 is not only for AMG
All of these are fine for your car.

229.51 is for diesel engines only dont put it any where near a petrol engine.
Sounds to me like your dealers are getting rich installing new engines in cars.
Shell ultra extra 229.51 is available even in my local supermarket. 229.51 oils should be available anywhere they sell oil

I live in Canada and drive a ML CDI. While Mobil 1 is available I prefer to use Motul X-Clean 5-40. It's is 229.51 and made in France. You should be able to find it there.

0W-40's are designed as world oils for use everywhere & are more expensive to formulate.

Hi!!
I too have a 2008 W204 C220 Diesel. My car has a 646.811 engine. My Vin Number is WDD2042081F278198. I think my car has a diesel particule filter (DPF) installed, but i am not sure.... So what type of oil should i use for change? 229.31, 229.5 or 229.51? What you think is best, Motul or Mobil?

You can set your oil type in the menu between 229.31 lowest spec permissible & 229.51 highest spec product. The Assyst will adjust your drain interval accordingly.
I have plenty of experience with 229.51. I come from a major multinational oil company. See my profile.
The 229.51 product is the best you can use for your car. The cars have come with 229.51 new from factory for many years now.
The major difference with 229.51 is superior engine & emissions system protection. That is why you can leave it in for longer.

Hello!
This thread is so old but this info might help other people.
I'm not an expert but as I read the attached file, 229.31 and 229.51 are not for diesel only.
Someone please let me know if I'm wrong.
Greetings

There is a different recommendation for vehicles in Western Europe than for The Rest of The World in this spec. My car was built in Germany but purchased in the US. I don’t know why there is a difference, but 229.5 oils are easy to find and inexpensive, so I just follow the recommendation.
