eco vs sports modes question

I just had a question i tried to look for briefly but had no luck in finding a clear answer.

Can you switch from eco to sports and sport to eco while driving or should you be on holding the break down in drive or fully in park to change it.

I've only been doing it while fully stopped and holding the brake down in drive.

let me know thanks

You can change it whenever - just let off the gas and change it. Don't try to change it while accelerating.

I have a related question. Aside from raising the RPM's for the gear shift points, does anyone else know exactly what the other differences are between the economy and sport modes? For example:

Does the economy mode lock out 1st gear (car launches in 2nd gear in economy)?
Is there a difference in throttle response between economy and sport?

Any reliable info would be appreciated.

The differences I notice in Sport mode are mostly related so sticking in the lower gears longer. So you get a bit more acceleration power and it has a more aggressive acceleration profile. In terms of pushing you back in your seat a bit more.

I drive a W204 Lux though so that may be why certain aspects are more pronounced.

Yeah, in eco mode the car normally starts off in 2nd gear. If you slam the pedal to the ground, it'll still set off in 1st gear though, but there will be a minor delay for the downshift.

I personally notice a big difference in throttle response between the two modes. In eco if I step on the gas it'll just accelerate while staying in the same gear; if I step on the gas in sport mode, it'll downshift appropriately

Is there anyway to have the car stay in sports mode instead of having to switch to sports mode every time you turn on the car?

Not on the later cars - I can't remember what year it changed though. Blame it on CAFE standards and Mercedes' need to get the vehicles across the board to try to average better fuel economy.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere on this forum you should only activate sport mode from a stop.

It's perfectly fine to engage sports mode while driving. Throttle response sharpens and I get more passing power. With my JB+ tune, I notice a big difference between eco and sport when accelerating.

If you look at pages 142 and 143 in the owner's manual it explains how to use these functions as well as telling what the differences are between E and S modes. My confusion was it is different between the AMG and regular vehicles. I am getting that in non AMG cars it IS o.k. to switch while driving.

In the manual it says to switch modes while stopped (at least for my 2014). However I switch it while driving, with my foot off the gas, without any issues.
