When to change spark plug wires and coils???
Hi
Just joined this forum. I have a 2008 c300 sport. Bought it new summer of 08 so I've owned it for 7 years now. It has 213,500 miles on her now. Just had its 36th oil change today. It's been the best car I've ever owned. And I've been driving MB products since my first 300E back in 1990, have had Es, S, SL, and this C.
Nothing ever broke until 210,000. Ac compressor went out. I've gotten 100k miles out of brake pads. Changed front struts at 210k miles for the heck of it.
Other than the bottom drivers seat wearing out ( seams deprecating ) the interior looks cherry. Trans shifts perfectly. Performed first trans fluid change at 100k miles then every 40k since. Other than tires, (on my 7th set now,) brakes, wiper blades, changed belt at 140k miles because idler pully started squeaking ( belt still looked good ), spark plugs at 110k miles, (due to change now) and light bulbs, nothing ever went wrong with this car! It's amazing. Absolutely the best car I've ever owned.
My question is about plugs. I am no mechanic, but changing these plugs are a snap. Did it myself the first time and ngks are available on line for under 60 bucks no tax and free shipping. Just ordered them. But wondering about wires and coils??? Should I change them now??? How do you know when to do that?
Thanks for being out there you guys. This forum is really helpful. If anyone knows or has a w204 ( 08-14 C300 ) with high miles, I'd like to compare notes with you on how your car has stood up.

When to change spark plug wires and coils???
Congrats on having such a good solid example. Always good to hear and it's encouraging.
As for coils and wires, I would not see any need to changes could if they haven't failed....not really a wear item. I would not change the wires unless they are excessively brittle and showing signs of cracks. Wires are more likely affected by time than mileage. Somewhere around 10yrs should be good for the wires. If the wires are brittle and starting to crack, then change them.

It's a 2wd car, not 4 matic, that's what's keeping me from buying new C400!
The new V6 C class only comes in 4matic so far. Maybe this year they will build 2wd c400s. By the way, thanks for your advise. Will leave well enough alone.
I have no idea of country of origin. How can I tell?
And I will try to figure out how to post photos. Thanks

I had the new c400 as a loaner great car great power.
if I was you I would wait for C450 this fall same twin turbo v6 as the 400 but with more power and AMG packages more than likely available in rear wheel drive also.
open drivers door bend down and look at the door frame on car chassis .

I too have an 08 C300 Sport - with a little over 100,000. Bought mine as a Rebuilt Salvage title with a check engine light on - getting to the end of it now, hopefully. Mechanic fixed what appears to have been a Secondary Air Injection problem, and when the CEL came back on, he says I've got a couple of cylinders misfiring. Said to replace the coils was $150 for the parts + $80 for labor for two new coils. This is LA County, but I hope that's a fair price. We'll see how this goes.
Thanks for your post and the insight.

Coils are really a DIY job, like changing wiper blades. Of course you'd need to know which ones needed replacing.

MBWorld Fanatic!
If you find one on doing the spark plugs it's one of the first steps.
Basically you pull the engine cover off, unclip the wire harness and pull it up till it pops off. If you've done it before it's like a < 5 minute job.
I'm not familiar with your engine so there could be some differences or difficulties but I doubt it. Only hard ones I've seen have been on V6 cylinder FWD cars.

I'll likely be replacing these this weekend - I'll let you all know how it goes. Maybe I'll try and post some photos for a DIY, who knows?

Testing Of Ignition Cables (from NGK)
Oh, and according to MB's Maintenance Booklet - 2008 - Passenger Cars - C-Class plugs are due for replacement at 91,000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first... And in your case, they should have been replaced at 182,000...
