Need Help with Stripped Steering Wheel Bolt

Anyone here had luck getting a stripped steering wheel bold off? I had a 10mm hex on it with a breaker bar and it felt like it just melted.

You sir are one unlucky SOB. I can't help but believe your luck has nowhere to go but up. I would get a lottery ticket!

I ran by the dealer and got a new bolt for when/if I ever get the old one off.

I can say this bolt design is a bit flawed. Given the bolt diameter, massive torque and locktite the 10mm hex depth just it's sufficient.

The design is fine, but will definitely happen if you use a non-hardened bit on a high torque application. What brand did you use?

Also, in the photo the inside part of the hex doesn't have the same deformation as the outside. Are you sure you inserted the key all the way?

I'm serious about that lottery ticket. Get one!

If you have enough depth you could try a correct size " easy out"

Good luck

I got it. I hammered in the bit and used a longer bar. It was still tough.

You don't need an impact gun.... just an extra set of hands. I thought I stripped mine but when I put pressure on the hex and my dad turned the bar it went right away. I can't remember but I think it's at 150nm on the torque bar. It's on tight but I'm not home to confirm.

There's tiny shavings of metal coming off, Clearly too much play. I'm going to have to get a 11MM.

I have breaker bar so that should be sufficient.

I'll pick up a new bolt from the dealer. But this is a mess.

Try hammering in the socket not to hard just tap it in and really push down on it. Get someone else to pull the breaker bar. I remember it being a ***** but well worth it. I had the same problem and that's how I solved it.

Unfortunately, I'm on my own. - I think once I go up to 11mm. that should do it.

11mm is too big. I did not want to force it in. I can’t get it off. I’ve wrestled with this fawwwk-ing thing for weeks. It sounds like I need a screw extractor.

I suppose I just rent one from Home Depot?

I got it out in about 1 minute....

10mm Hex. No hammering or anything.
Although one person held the steering wheel while I used both hands to get it.

If you want a picture of the bolt let me know.

Finally got the the son of ***** out. Breaker bar even with another person was not possible. Had to use an air gun. It took him a bit. Wholly **** this was an ordeal. The nightmare is over!!
