DIY: 12-14 C250 Basic Maintenance: Oil Change, Intake and Cabin Air Filter etc

Here is my first post regarding my experiences when performing some basic maintenancetasks on our 2012-2014 C250. The intent is to combine the information together with links and reference so that you don't have to keep searching around. I had read posts, watched youtube videos, asked my mechanics and searched for parts in order to figure everything out.

Performing DIYis at your own risk, I am not responsible for any damage to your car and yourself for void warranty. Always proceed with caution, read carefully before any action.

I would continue to improve and edit the post. Will upload more pictures if needed.

  • Oil Change
Maintenance Frequency: Manual says every 1 year or 10k mi. I just do it every 5k miles or every ½ year as I do a lot of stop and go. In addition, I think the factory schedule is way too long for a small engine like this with such a small filter and small quantity of engine oil. Our turbo also require lubrication from engine oil. If the oil is dirty, it could eventually damage the turbo and engine in a long term run. I plan to keep my car long and I think oil change is just cheap insurance. But, it’s up to you to perform at a whatever you feel comfortable.

Duration: 45 mins first time, 30mins after.

Parts:
Oil filter:2711800509
Qty:1 comes with all three o-rings
@ OEDiscount Parts

Engine oil: Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 0W-40
Qty:5.8 US quarts (I bought two 5 quarts bottles)
@ Amazon (or Walmart)

Engine oil extractor: Griot Oil Extractor
Qty:1
@ Griot Garage (or Amazon has similar items)

27 mm Oil Filter Socket (3/8” If you use difference size ratchet, you need to find one that fits yours. My ratchet is 3/8”)
@ Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KMULLY2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Torque Wrench: Micro torque wrench (Optional)
https://www.craftsman.com/products/craftsman-micro-clicker-torque-wrench-3-8-drive?taxon_id=1829

Regular socket set, funnel, small philip screw driver, shop towels.

Procedure:

  • From a cold start, fire up the car to warm about 5mins.
  • Shut off the car, pull the dip sticks out.
  • Start with checking your oil level from the dip sticksto make sure the level is at correct level and you engine is not leaking oil.
  • Open/remove oil cap on top of the engine.
  • Remove the engine cover by pop/pull upward, no screws.
  • Insert the oil extractor tube into the dipstick holeand all the way to the bottom.
  • Give the oil extractor handle a couple push.
  • Soon, you will hear dripping sound and will see theoil coming out by the vacuum effect.
  • Have a beer or play with your kid (in my case), comesback 10 mins later.
  • Give it a couple more push and more oil will come out.
  • Will it finish, there should be approximately 5.8quarts of oil in the extractor.
  • Slowly loosen oil filter using the 27mm socket (helpwith an extension). Located at the right back of the engine. The filter should say “Turbo” in orange.
  • Once it is loosened, place some shop towels and ragsaround the filter. Pull it out and place it on another towel or rag at the same time. (Oil will drip out from the filter!)
  • Please the filter in a container and wipe offexcessive oil.
  • Take a picture on the filter to show the location ofthe O-rings.
  • Remove the all three O-rings by using a pick or just atiny Philip screw driver.
  • Pull the filter cartilage off from the housing byusing some forces.
  • Lube the oil rings with some of your new 0W-40 engineoil. (Important!)
  • Install the filter, O-rings in order.
  • Install the filter back to the engine. There should bea torque requirement on top of the housing that say 24 NM. Torque it to spec or just hand tighten it.
  • Pull the oil extractor tube out and insert the dipstick back in.
  • Fill the engine through the funnel with 5.8 quarts withfreshly new engine oil.
  • Once done, reset the scheduler/reminder: https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-coupe-c204/497390-diy-c250-cgi-oil-change.html
  • Fire the engine up, let it run for 2-3 three mins.
  • Shut off the engine, check the oil level at the dipstick.
  • Wash, clean, dry and install the engine cover backonto the engine.
  • Complete and clean everything up. Make sure you didn’tleave anything in the engine bay area.
  • I spray a little engine degreaser to clean the oil extractor tubing.
  • Completed and properly recycle the used oil.

  • Air Filter
ReferenceLink: https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w204/415504-diy-c180cgi-k-n-air-filter-replacement.html

Parts:
Air filter: 2710940304(I do not like K&N because I hate the cleaning and drying part. I found that just switching the OEM filter every two years is far easier than dealing with K&N filter. The performance improvement is very small even you can feel it. But, it’s up to you to perform at a whateveryou feel comfortable.)
Qty:1
@ OEDiscount Parts

T25 Torx Screwdriver
@Amazon

Philipscrew driver

Procedure:

  • Shut off the car.
  • Remove the engine cover by popping it off or pullingstraight up.
  • Loosen three screws (1 front, 2 rear) on the airfilter/intake cover.
  • Also loosen the strip clamp that holds the intakehousing and the flexible fabric intake hose. Use a Philip screw driver.
  • Pull the flexible fabric intake hose backward toexpose the intake housing.
  • Remove the intake cover.
  • Remove the housing with the filter.
  • Install the filter, housing, and cover.
  • Tighten all screws and install the flexible hose backup.
