P0705 Code - Transmission sensor - mechanic says only dealer can fix

I've been lurking for a week or more and reading various posts on the forum regarding the P0705 error and the transmission conductor plate. The check engine light came on in my 2010 MB C350 about a month ago. I cleared the code because the car has been driving fine, but it keeps coming back.

Today I called my local Mercedes mechanic in Atascocita, TX (Houston suburb) and he said that he cannot change the transmission conductor plate because Mercedes considers it an "anti-theft" device (my regular mechanic referred me to these guys). Hence, he said that I would have to take it to the dealer for the repair and it would be about an $1,800 job.

I am looking for some advice on this one because I'm not sure who to believe. I just laid out $500 for a thermostat change at the dealer two months ago and have no desire to pay those rates again. I am still paying down medical bills from radiating a brain tumor last year.

Any help is appreciated. Many thanks.

I know this is of no help but I am glad you're still with us after that tumor.

I did thermostat for $65 myself, so do not do stuff at dealer.

Although as far as I know, the conductor plate is not a diy job...I do not have experience with it though...but I've spent much more on this car is all I can say.

As Colin said, glad you're still here. Best in health.

Many thanks. Lost a bit of hearing in one ear and my balance isn't what it used to be, but I can't complain. I had a fantastic radiation oncologist!

Many thanks. And yes, I agree with your comments on the thermostat. I was busy with work at the time and just decided to let the dealer do it because the car was there. But I won't make that mistake again.

MB won't sell the conductor plate outside of the dealership, so you don't have a lot of options there. Even if they did sell it, it has to be learned in via SDS so it's not just a simple driveway swap. The actual procedure to replace it is not difficult, just a trans service plus unbolting the valve body and then removing the plate and installing the new one. The programming is what keeps it from being DIY'able though.

Take a look at my thread in here

it can be done

But, everything else should be ruled out before you dig into the trans.

The valve body is expensive, the conductor plate, not so much. The valve body is strictly mechanical though, you don't need to get that done via the dealership.

the MB stealership will not sell a separated TCM nor program one that isn't purchased from them.

I have gotten pretty friendly with MB of Chandler here in AZ. MB is run like the FBI of the automotive world.

How about a belt tensioner and drive belt? The dealer quoted me $700 for that - ridiculous. Bought both and did it in my driveway for about $100.

The plate is available separately, I change them all the time. You only have to replace the entire VB if you have the earlier VGS 1 or 2. If the car has a VGS3 VB in it already, there's a repair kit that is just the conductor plate/TCM itself.

Mercedes C250 Sedan 2013
I just bought a TCM from my local dealer for about USD900.

Fixed the TCM and programmed it, and after programming the transmission likes to stay on the higher gears, but after driving sometime now it's become normal. Anyway, I had a speed sensor error.

If you want a TCM (unused, brand new in a box) let me know, we have it here.

I hope your mechanic is correct. First, I paid $500 for a software install. Next, another $2,300 for the conductor plate.

Sorry its over a year since this last message. What was the final outcome to fix this issue? I am getting same code only when restarting the car shortly after turning it off. I am also in the Tampa area.
