W204 4Matic Propeller shaft replacement
I am in the process of changing the propeller shaft, (transfer case to front differential), part# 2044106701. I have the pulled the passenger side exhaust, shaft has been unbolted but I don't have enough room to remove it. Others have advised me to unbolt the front differential to make room. It seems incredibly difficult to reach the bolts to unbolt the differential. Can anyone confirm the steps required to replace this part?

Unbolted the "Rear engine cross member" and lowered the transmission as far as it goes, hope i didn't break anything. Still cant slide the shaft past the front differential. Planning on cutting the old one out tomorrow and seeing if I can get the new shaft into place.

Just an update... my car with 300k km was making a whining noise when letting off gas and noises when parking (reverse, d on a downhill specially). After a checkup during Service B my indie told me that the front end of the propeller shaft was seriously damaged. I had it fully repaired/reconstructed at a local repair shop and now drives like new. Cost was total €300 EUR (€200 EUR for the repair and €100 EUR for my indie).

Hey all I know this is an old post, but I am also going through the pain of changing the front propeller shaft on my 2012 C300 W204 4matic, I have removed the exhaust/cat, and lowered the trans, I have the old damaged shaft off, but after 12 hours of trying to get the new shaft on, I haven't been successful and the car remains on the lift. Would anyone be able to provide some insight on installing the new driveshaft? I know its a longshot, I just want to drive my car again. Open to any insight you or anyone else might be able to provide on getting the prop shaft back over the splines and attached to the front diff.

I recall a YouTube video showing a pry bar used to move the rear transfer case (rear trans mount removed) towards the driver's side...??

That is correct gamma300C, We used the pry bar to shift the xfer case to the drivers side, then wedged a piece of 2x4 to hold it in place, per one of the mechanics at the merc dealership. Just can’t get the driveshaft to line up. The universal joint was still extended past the front diff. It just doesn’t make any sense why it won’t drop on to the spline drive extending from the xfer case. Marked the driveshaft master splines and have them lined up, the damn thing just won’t budge. It was a full 6 hours of jiggling around under the car. Very frustrating. The mechanic at the dealership told me “good luck” and said it is one of the worst jobs they have to do, and some guys lower the front diff. I just can’t see how that would help unless it changes the angle of the driveshaft when we are trying to set the splines.
