2013 C350 3.5 V6 Petrol - Best oil to use?
I own a 2013 C350 3.5 V6 Petrol and would like to know which oil is the best to use for topping up.
It was recommended that I use Castrol Edge 5w-40.
Is this correct or is there something better?

Top off? These engines shouldn't burn any noticeable oil unless you extend your oil change intervals. I've used Mobil 1 0W40 from 120 000km to 240 000, present mileage with perfect running conditions and no oil consumption on 7000km oil change intervals. I do also use half a bottle of sea foam in the crank case before I change the oil, I drive no more then 30miles after putting the sea foam, let it idle for 10mins before I removal the oil hot(need to be careful because the oil will be hot obviously), you will get more of the old oil out with any debris that the sea foam knocked down. much easier on a hot engine.

The next service is due soon so it shouldn't be a problem but I was just wondering what oil to use if needed.

A quick online search has revealed that Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 has rating of MB229.5 which is correct for my vehicles engine.
Does anyone have any experience with it?
Is it any good?

Many oils have the MB229.5 approval. Dealers do not use Shell/Castrol and etc. oils but they use OEM Mercedes-Benz Oil and there are many of them as well. It could be 0w-40, 0w-30, 5w-40, 5w30 and etc.
Generally, the important information is MB229.5 and the type of oil (0w-40, 0w-30, 5w-40, 5w30). The brand is not that important for topping up but I always use the same oil brand for topping up.

It already has 14 000km on the old unknown oil, at this point I would just change it, there are many MB229.5 approved oil, personally, I wouldn't use anything other then Mobil 1 or Liqui Moly, either one is good but once you pick one, stick with it, changing the type of oil or mixing them isn't the greatest for the engine and seals.

I have used oils from shell to Millers to voltronic to BMW oem oil in my Benz with no problems. However I do change my oil every 4000km but I also drive my car like I stole it. I send each oil change sample out for testing and they've all come back positive. Depending on how often you change the oil and how hard you drive the car, I personally don't think there is much merit to worry.

I've used Mobil 1 in every Benz (6 of them over the years), even those which had over 100k miles on them when I purchased the car.
Our garage now has a 1998 SLK230 Kompressor with 44k miles. I've changed the oil twice since owning it (bought it in 2015 with 34k miles and it's one of the first dozen or so imported to the US, having been ordered in 1995 & I have the docs to prove it) and have used Mobil 1 0W40 (which I believe was the oil in the engine from the factory and some people have said the factory MB oil is actually Mobil 1, but I really don't know). It's not driven much and the oil is still clean from last Fall's oil change. Our 2013 C300 4Matic (Sport version) has the M276 engine and I didn't know what type of oil was in it (as I didn't know what oil was in all of our Benzes when purchased). So, after a bit of research, I stumbled upon FCP Euro, who sells Lubri Moly synthetic oil. It's a bit more expensive than Mobil 1 (Lubri Moly likely more money due to it being from Germany), but the specs are very good and the reports of its use are top notch. So, I tried it. It will be changed every 5k miles with a Mann or Hengst felt filter. I cannot find a let filter for the SLK230 engine, so it will continue to get the Mann paper version.
I use a Topsider oil change system which works well. An older version just plain wore out as the can would no longer hold the pressure so I purchased a new one. Works great and no muss or fuss in getting underneath the car to remove the belly pan, slide a drain pan underneath and then remove the drain plug, then wait for it to stop dripping and then button it all back up. With the Topsider, following the directions with the system removes more oil than what can be drained via the drain plug since there are some small ridges which block some oil from being drained out via the plug. I usually go through the pressurization a couple of times to get it all out, which is not a problem. I have more than enough time to replace the oil filter and check out other things under the hood while the oil is being sucked out into the can.
