It sounds a little bit like a tractor. Are all the exhaust ports holding?

Quite impressive undertaking over these last couple months. Looks like you really dodged a bullet. Hope from here on out you have good luck with it. I would guess you would file this under: Well I won't do that again.

no i think i have a leak. not sure if it the grease/anti-seize burning off or a leak. Waiting for it to cool down and will take another look. The noise normalized when it warmed up.

Just got back from an hour long roughly 50 mile test drive. No CEL's, smoking. rough idle or anything of the sort. There was a little smoke coming from exhaust manifold that I thought was a leak but its not there anymore so I think it was grease.

Glad to see you saw this through! However, you won’t know right away of any internal damage. We have to wait and see, you might be really lucky. I agree on oil additives probably doing damage.

No I am no mechanic professional or otherwise. I would not even call myself a hobbyist - i have worked on cars from time to time but not for fun. It just so happened that I had a blown head gasket and needed to do something about it. The price quotes I got from the dealers and an indie were prohibitively high so that was a no go. After doing some research of what was involved and watching a few YouTube videos - I decided to give it a go.

I think I can conclusively say that the head gasket issue is solved after driving the car for 2 days about 300 miles since repair.

Before repair:

After reading your own admissions and the rest - I've been lurking/rooting for you to get it working. Happy you didn't waste your efforts. Nice work.

If it was me I would have saved that 50K mile oil and put it all back in after the work was done, and try for another 50K on it.

What makes you think I did not reuse the oil? You wanted to bet on how long it would last after the repair? Well its 3000 miles since the repair and still going strong.

Still going strong. I do not drive her as often as I would like, I have put on close to 9K miles since the repair and no issues at all.

So coming up on an oil change?

Amazing thread and great repairs. Props for tackling the job and by all indications doing it very well!
