Engine oil level on dipstick

I’ve notice a peculiar occurrence when checking the oil (usually when getting gas). I’ll wait a couple of minutes and check the level on the dipstick. Every time on the first pull after shutting the engine off, it comes out virtually dry (less than a drop of oil gets on the paper towel). I IMMEDIATELY reinsert and check it again, and it comes out full. Then, if I check it again, it still shows full. This has happened several times and makes no sense.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I don't fully understand why either but doesn't hurt anything.

I suppose it could be postulated that a fair amount of the oil is doing its job cooling and lubing instead of relaxing in the oil pan with the car up and running.

At least we have a dipstick.to check, unlike daughter's BMW that requires the engine to be running at operating temp to check the level electronically......

This happens every oil change for me. I pull out 7L add 7L wait 10 minutes it still shows 0 reading on the stick

Even on level ground!

So the way to check the oil is run the car so it hot then turn off the car wait 10 min and re check, if I do this I always have a reading on the dip stick.

It’s almost as if there is some sort of check valve that keeps the oil in the engine and withdrawing the dipstick releases it. Next time, I’ll pull it out only half way and then reinsert it fully and check the level.

I'll try that out tonight, all I can say is i really don't even need to check it as the car never uses oil. As long as I pull out 7L with the mityvac I just put 7 back in lol but my ocd kicks in and I just want the dip stick to work lol
