2012 C300 4MATIC Sport
I decided to go with the 2012 M272, which had all its problems ironed out by the end of its lifetime then, rather than going with the M276 which was fairly new and had its share of problems. Similar to the early batches of M272 which had plenty of problems too at the beginning: balance shaft problem.

The second piece of information came from my friend who's a master technician at the local MB dealership. He was fixing a lot of M276 engines, suffering from the problems I stated, on 2013 and 14 W204s than he was on 2012 M272 W204s which were super reliable by then.

The third piece of information is that I found my car with 5,900 miles only so I wasn't going to pass on that.

I know the M276 became more reliable later on and is a more powerful engine and all that, but given the above, I think I was pretty objective in my decision relative to my needs.

I have a 2012 C300 4Matic Sport with the M272 with 93,0xx KM (57,000mi) on it.

I have a log and receipts for absolutely everything since new right down to every time I have filled up with gasoline (Chevron 94 Supreme Plus, always!) and strictly by the numbers it has been the least expensive Mercedes-Benz I have owned on a per-kilometers-driven basis by a large margin.

For reference I have owned over 30 MB's spanning the model years 1970 - 2012 and currently own an 1989 560SEC AMG and a 2006 CLS 500.

I have a ‘13 c300 with the 276, bought it with 16k on it. I now have around 72k on the odometer with not one engine issue going to the dealer. The only problems I’ve had was the command unit going bad, front sway bar links replaced due to suspension noise, replaced headlight and tail light bulbs( I think there has been a discussion about tail lights burning out due to grounds?), and the blower motor going bad. Other then that just maintenance far as I remember, which I now do. I do go through tires though which gets expensive, been using the OEM conti’s but think I’ll switch to Michelin’s and see if they have the same wear issues. I think for a German car it’s been quite good(first one). Like said before, I think this HPFP issue is blown out of proportion, but the 272 will probably be a bit more reliable overall I guess. Most important is that the car was maintained properly! Right now I’ve owned it 4yrs having close to 60k put on it. I plan to keep it to maybe 150k or so, but that depends on how things go. I have no worries about talking it for long trips!

Mercedes was ironing out the issue with the check valves and stuff by 02/2013. I think OP has settled on a 2014 W212 with the 302hp M276. He can run his VIN to see if the engine is within range, but it likely is not.

I had no issues with the M272 cars I owned, either. Those seemed like fine engines at the time.. but the M276 was a large step up.
