What is this? And how do I drain the torque converter?

What is this? And how do I drain the torque converter?

Did a survey for my upcoming tranny fluid change. Found this under the bell housing, where most of the DIYs show the rubber plug for access to the torque converter drain plug. There's a plug off to the side, but I can barely see in there, and the fluid won't come out--it'll pool in the bottom of the housing. What is this thing? Is it the oil pump for ECO start/stop operation? Can it be removed? Anyone have a procedure for this variant of the 722.9 Plus?
Thanks!

Check this post and the entire thread. It's an excellent maintenance thread.

That is a wonderful thread and is separately bookmarked in my browser. However, I read it before I posted--the big .pdf from MB on the tranny was where I got the idea that the thing in the picture might be the oil pump for ECO mode. And I actually went under the car to make sure I had the right oil pan as he details.
However, unlike the procedure there, or other similar ones I've read, or the videos, I don't have a visible, downward-facing port on the bell housing--just the one on the right. Will I if I remove the thing pictured (pump?)? Anyone have a version of the procedure for draining the TC on this variant of the 722.9 Plus?

Let's see if @Xzero can chime in on this.

Since I have only worked on a 722.9, not the PLUS variant, I have never seen that box before.

I would assume it will have the bell housing opening to the torque converter drain plug but we all know what happens when we assume!

Is there any part number on that box? Can you scan that QR code and see if it shows what that part is?

Aux pump for Start-Stop must be removed to access torque converter

So I crawled back under the car tonight and can now answer my own questions:
The picture is of the auxiliary fluid pump for the transmission (722.9 Plus). It's part number A 221 270 0197 which can be found near the QR code in the picture when the light is just right. It connects to the tranny with a locking connector (left in the picture), two short bolts (left, top and bottom), and a long bolt (just "above" the cooling fins on the right side of the photo). All are Torx and easily removed. The pump can be pulled down maybe 3/8", at which point I spotted the rubber bell-housing plug that must be the usual access to the torque converter. Further removal causes a gusher of tranny fluid as two small tubes between the pump and tranny disengage.

Therefore, I'd recommend when doing the tranny service to drain the pan first (including knocking out the standoff), then removing the pump and draining the TC. Otherwise Xzero's procedure should apply.

Nothing like a little exploratory surgery! Thanks to all for the links and help.

That little rubber plug on the right just above the exhaust mounting tabs is what our models get for an access port to the TC. You can turn the engine at the crank by hand to reveal the drain plug but it's orientation makes it near impossible to rethread the bolt once removed.

Anyone know the torque values for the bolts on the auxiliary pump?
