m272 and tuning
Hey C300 owners, for those of you that have experience with tuning, can you give me any info on the tune-ability of the M272 3.0?
I have a tuner here that I am meeting with on Thursday, he will remove speed limiter, throttle lag, and I assume tune for 93 octane, and K&N filters.
My question is - is there any info I should give him? Is this engine ok to tune? It will be stage 1 I imagine. My last bmw I tuned was a 4 cyl turbo and I ended up blowing the engine.
Any input from anyone who knows what they are talking about - not just ideas or guesses, would be fantastic.
Thank you,
John

If it's some random dude, don't bother. Go either eurocharged or OE tune. You aren't getting more than 20hp anyways, better not mess up your timing and stuff from some backhand tuning.

Thanks for the response - that makes a lot of sense... I did some more research and the tuner is associated with a reputable tuner I have worked with in the past (not on tuning specifically) so I feel much better about it now.
Any other specifics about this car and it's overall tunability?

I stayed away from a tune since the car is 4MATIC and I did not want to add more stress to the transmission and differentials (especially in the front) and the associated planetary gear. I realize 20 HP is something, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
If I wanted another car, I would have gone with a 2013+ C350 model with the M276 engine which produces 306 HP.

Tuned!
Well worth it! I got a great deal and the tuner specializes in Mercedes. No more lag, feels much more confident on the highway, I can easily get on it now, no more sluggishness.
As many others have pointed out - now it feels like it should have from the factory. Thank you for the responses.
K&N filters and xpipe are the only mods for now (besides cosmetic). Any suggestions on more mods?

A local tuner in Orlando, he’s a friend of a tuner who I have had work done on my previous bmws. But this guy specializes in Mercedes. I’ve been chatting with him and his customers for many months now, and once I learned he had partnered with my Bmw tuner I knew I was in good hands, as I have a good relationship with them.

I am 100% doing that next - thank you for the reminder. With all that sh*t going on lately it's easy to forget some of these things.... I upgraded my headlights myself on prior cars and it does transform the front end. Considering removing the badges, but I think I'lll wait until I go quad exhaust... or if I go quad exhaust...
thanks!
thanks!

I'm sure you realize a normally aspirated engine is not going to give you the types of gains you'll see on a turbo or supercharged car. That said, it's interesting that the M276 normally aspirated engine M276 DE35 went from 248hp to 302hp from tuning alone. So, if you have a "detuned" engine, you may see significant gains with a tune. Sometimes I believe manufacturers do this to "encourage" you to upgrade when buying a car. Cost of production is the same, so they don't have to build different engines. They can just tune or detune for performance "features".
From Wikipedia:Three variants of the normally aspirated M276 DE 35 engine were produced in 2010–2017 with a displacement of 3.5 L (3,498 cc), bore and stroke of 92.9 mm × 86 mm (3.66 in × 3.39 in). Output of the first variant introduced on 2011 C350 BlueEfficiency with 12.2:1 compression ratio is 215 kW (292 PS; 288 hp) at 6400 rpm with 365 N⋅m (269 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3000–5100 rpm.
Output of the second variant with 12.2:1 compression ratio is 225 kW (306 PS; 302 hp) at 6500 rpm with 370 N⋅m (273 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3500–5250 rpm. S350, CLS350, ML350, E350 and W204 C350 models received this higher output version from 2011 to 2015. S400h hybrid model used this engine from 2012 to 2017 in combination with an electric motor in between the engine and torque converter.
Detuned version of this engine was introduced on C300, and used also by E300 and S300 from model year 2013 to 2015, producing 248 hp (185 kW; 251 PS) and 251 lb⋅ft (340 N⋅m) of torque.
