Why not just have it repaired?

From the dealer or an upholstery place?

From an auto upholstery shop. Ask a local high end used car dealer where they get interior work done.

Let me know what they say as I’ve asked 2 upholstery shops and they both have said they will just order a new seat cover for $300CDN and install it for 1 hours labour.

I was under the assumption that a capable upholsterer could:

- Remove the seat bottom (5-10min max)
- Remove the seat cushion (not sure as I haven’t gone that far)
- Cut out perforated section
- Cut proper size of matching perforated fake leather material (This material should be very common)
- Sew in new perforated material
- Install seat cover
- Install seat cushion

Maybe I was just unlucky and spoke to 2 lazy shops?

I do the busywork myself. Remove the seat. Remove the cushion. Skin the cushion. Take to upholstery shop. Reverse when done. Something simple like restitch a seam, $30-$40. Replace a torn panel, $60-$80.

So I reached out to one more upholstery shop and received the below answer. They have the correct material, it’s cheaper than an OEM Mercedes replacement cover that will rip again because of how it was stitched but the 4 hours of labor is garbage.

I would do the same as the above user and at least just bring them the cover to repair then hand back to me and probably knock of 3 of those “hours” off.

Shop Response:

So because of the way those seats are sewn they are just a surface stitch not an actual seam which is why it came apart so
easy, but that means too that there's not enough material to just sew it back together and make a seam

We do have the black perforated material from Mercedes, we can replace that center panel for you, it's 3-4 hours worth of
work so you're looking at $275 + GST to get that done

On the day of your appointment we would need the vehicle by 9am and we would have it have to you that afternoon

EDIT: So I sent a response:

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick response. What If I were to just hand you the skin/cover and you were to cut the center out and replace, I can handle the removal/installation. May I have a quote for that?

Thank you!

Shops Response:

You can take $25 off if you just bring us the cover, the time is in the sewing, not the dismantling.

What a joke! If it takes them 3-4 hours to cut out a piece of material and sew another piece in, I assume 45 minutes of that is doing the actual work while the other 3 hours is used working out another job while charging that person 3-4 hours as well.

I’d rather give $300 to Mercedes for another seat cover that’ll rip in 10 years than give a red cent to that thieving shop.

I’d happily pay $300. A new seat cover is like 700-800 for me, not installed. Though I could do it myself.

Contact this place: https://www.facebook.com/CEberlyAuto...teryofManheim/ Call or send a picture and ask if it can be done by mail if you send the removed cover. Ask for Carl. Tell him Potomac sent you.
