2008 4MATIC transmission - Can it be swapped to a newer 722.9?

So, long story short I think I've got the dreaded transmission whine. I have an 08 4MATIC with the 7G transmission (722.9). Is it possible to swap in a 7G PLUS from a newer (like 2013) W204 4MATIC?

A I understand it, these seem to have fewer problems than the older 722.9 models. If the newer one will bolt on and run OK I'm tempted to go that route.

Otherwise, is it necessary to replace the entire transmission or can replacing the bears in the transfer case help rid those annoying noise?

Thanks in advance!

Complete transmission needed as Mercedes does not sell parts for the transfer case. As long as the engines are the same it should bolt right on.

From reading here and elsewhere, it seems while MB doesn't sell parts they are just Timkin bearings. Not sure if that's all I'll need though, if that's replaceable. I found them here:

Though if that isn't gonna work I may just get a newer 722.9 and hope it doesn't give me trouble.

EDIT: I have been digging and found a few of these transmissions from 2013-2014 c300s with 4matic and 3.0L. To clarify, this transmission should bolt to my 2008 4MATIC 3.0L, correct? Will this require reprogramming at the dealer?

EDIT YET AGAIN: Upon further inspection, I'm not sure the 2013 C300 was even available in a 3.0L, despite an ebay listing for a 3.0L 2013 4MATIC transmission. That being the case, will the 7G+ from a 2013 with 3.5L engine swap onto my 2008 originally outfitted with the older 7G on my 3.0L?

I appreciate your insight. I have spent hours digging these forums, Facebook pages and other websites trying to find this info and haven't found it.

Do you happen to have a video or recording of the whine?

I do. I believe you should be able to hear it here. I also got the car on a lift and listened to it while running and accelerating. The noise is definitely coming from the transmission / transfer case area.

Thanks for the video.

So I hear the “whirring” but what is that tapping sound from 20-16 seconds? Is that also a symptom of the transfer case?

I believe you're hearing the rain hitting my windshield. Unfortunately I couldn't change that variable when taking the video 😁

L.O.L.

I am a dummy. I am currently on my cell phone and I was so focused on holding the phone to my ear to hear the sounds that I didn’t even realize that it was raining.

At least I had my “brain fart of the day” here and not while working....

Well if it makes you feel any better I already changed pads and rotors on this car before I listened to it and figured out it was coming from transmission or transfer case. We all make some funny calls.

Anyone have any idea if this is doable? Can I take a 7g-Tronic PLUS 4matic from a 2013 3.5L (or really any 7g tronic plus) and put it on my 2008 C300 3.0l 4matic?

If I'm going to do the work to swap the trans and program it to the car it seems logical to go the 7g-tronic PLUS route if that's something that would actually work.
