Exclamation Mobil1 0w-40 European formula and DIRECT INJECTION

Hey everyone,

With reading on another post about a weird noise I thought I would post this for everyone since I already switched my engine oil.

I stumbled across this video last night from Lake, the motor oil geek.

He STRONGLY advised to not use the mobil1 0w-40 European formula in any direct injection engine based on his findings.

Here's the video for you all to view yourselves and make the decision on your own.

I've already switched to LIQUIMOLY MOLYGEN and happy I did after seeing this video. He has also been endorsed by Dave from Dave's auto center for his research.

Watch the video and decide for yourself if you'll keep running the mobil1 0w-40 European formula in your direct injection Mercedes.

Hope this helps!

Thanks OP for the heads up!

The video used is the older formula of Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro. The newer one I believe started appearing on shelfs since 2023 is API SP rated.

That said, there are better oils than Mobil 1 in general, in fact, we had quite a discussion on the oil pump solenoid thread.

Correct, newer Mobil 1 0W-40 is API SP rated. However, I have switched to Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40. From what I have seen, nearly all modern engines in the last 10 years are DI. I'm sure there are exceptions. But why did it take Mobil 1 three years to become compliant with API SP? Maybe that's how long it took to clear out the old stock.

Yup that is probably it as it is a popular oil after all, didn't dealerships uses a rebranded version of it?

Pennzoil was one of the many oils discussed in the oil pump solenoid thread indeed and also one of those I too will recommend.

Thoughts on Amsoil? I heard very good things about them too.

Otherwise there are always recommendations for Liqui Moly.

Appreciate the insight here fellas @JettaRed and @W205C43PFL ! I wasn't aware that mobile1 came out with an updated formula. AND IM SURPRISED it took them that long to follow suite and update their formula.

I've heard good things about the Pennzoil and Amsoil. I follow Alex from Legit street cars and that's all he uses is Amsoil. And in the flip, Samcraac recommends Pennzoil in his videos.

Since I've switched to the new generation MOLYGEN 5w-40 I've noticed a decrease in overall engine noise and a 1-2 increase in MPG.

I'll be on my 2nd full oil change of MOLYGEN this week. Planning to do an oil and filter change before my road trip upcoming at the end of the week.

I wanted to bring this to light and raise awareness for anyone running the mobil1 0w-40 European formula! Like @JettaRed said most modern cars are direct injection.

If you like amsoil, there is a forum member called @ChrisHimself on here that is a vendor or supplier (forgot which) of amsoil that you could probably get a nice discount as a forum member.

not denying amsoil is great oil and chris is a great guy (he is pretty helpful on the forums answering forum member questions. I just admittedly have no experience with amsoil I would consider them in the future though, and I mean, I do also trust LegitStreetCars, he was also an mb tech back then.

As for Molygen, I saw this thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...ispreloading=1

The manufacturer themselves do not recommend Molygen for some reason, read more in that thread.

I've heard that before ! I 'believe' that was for the original formula of MOLYGEN. They have since created a 'new' formula for MOLYGEN and meets the 229.5 for MB.

I still didn't see it on the approved list but only time will tell. I am a maintenance nut and change my engine oil every 3-5k miles.

I intend to keep running it due to the additive formula and not wanting to keep changing oils. I had a noticeable difference that I posted a video on regarding sound DECIBAL readings, vs mobile1 and molygen. There was a 2 DECIBAL decrease from the mobil1 to the MOLYGEN.

I also Had to change my valve cover earlier this week and did an inspection while I was in there. I did not notice any wear, glitter, or anything out of the ordinary while doing that job. All the cam lobes looked perfect as well.

I will update the team when I do the oil change this week. I can inspect the oil and filter for wear particles.

Ah haha : ) Thanks for mentioning that they have a new formula as well. We both were caught off-guard with this new formula thing, for you it was mobil 1, for me is Liqui Moly molygen.

It is a good thing that a new formula actually improves things for both Mobil1 and Molygen in this case as that is rarity in my experience lately.

Dishwashing detergent that is advertising a new formula contains more water, then there is salad dressing advertising new formula I found the taste much worse and the quantity also decreased. Then there are all the other products that said new look new packages which is really to hide the fact they downsized.

Since we are on an MB forum, in forum member streamliner's experience, the W223 E-ABC suspension was apparently inferior to the previous option in the W222.

I wish these products mentioned can stay true to the if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I wonder if mobil 1 is just bad oil to begin with, maybe just maybe if you had a chance to try pennzoil, amsoil... basically anything other than mobil1, you might see the same effect of decreasing by 2 decibels. just my thought.

By the way OP, I pretty much mention this in every thread (and not sure if it is applicable to your C 250, I believe with the M271 engine?) but you might want to unplug the oil pump solenoid, I would do a oil pressure test before and after to make sure your solenoid behaves in the way it is mentioned in the thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...solenoids.html

I would be curious to know as well! If I decide to change oils again I'll definitely do a decibal reading

Interesting! I'll dig deeper into this for the m271evo engine in the c250! I'm not afraid of doing testing to ensure my engine is healthy.

Appreciate the info!

You're most welcome! I am extremely grateful to those who contributed to this project re: oil pump solenoid

and the reason I keep mentioning it across many threads is because I believe good things are worth sharing.

My experience with unplugging has been extremely positive with absolutely no downsides.

I hope you can benefit from this mod and that your engine is applicable since I believe no one did this on the M271 yet, hence why I recommend doing oil pressure testing manually with gauges to make sure it behaves the way it behaves on the other MB engines.
