Battery registation w/ iCarsoft MB3.0

2013 C350 4matic, 82,500 kms, Canadian model.

I have the iCarsoft MB3.0 scanner. After installing a new battery, I tried to "register" it with the scanner. The registration function was unavailable for use with my vehicle. I updated the scanner software, however, still no registration functionality. Am I doing something wrong that prohibits me from using this function?

If it is not possible with this scanner, can anyone recommend a scanner app that works with an ELM bluetooth OBD II module, that will provide the battery registration function?

I have replaced the battery twice in my 2010 W204 and did not have to register or do any additional steps. Simple remove and replace the battery. I did have to reset the time and date in the dash settings.

Fairly sure there is no battery registration with W/X204. Didn’t do it for the entire 260,000 miles and 9 years of mine.

I also replaced the battery twice and not registration needed or there's no option to do it.

Nobody seems to know anything about battery registration, except that "it's necessary", "modern car electronics are sensitive" and "it's essential for optimum battery life". I'm waiting for a technical explanation, not an excuse to be charged for some service in addition to the battery and installation cost. (I replaced my battery 3 years ago, and it's been fine without registration, if such was ever necessary.)

I replaced my battery with no need to register it. It's been happy that way for over a year.

Mercedes battery registration is the process of informing the car's computer (ECU/SAM module) via a diagnostic tool that a new battery has been installed. Key Details on Battery Registration:
  • Why It's Needed: The charging system treats older batteries differently to maintain charge. Without registration, the car may overcharge the new battery, reducing its lifespan.
  • What it Involves: It tells the Battery Management System (BMS) to reset electrical charge throughput to zero.
  • Tools Required: Professional tools like
    , Autel, or
can be used to perform this function through the OBD2 port.
  • Where to Get it Done: Dealerships or independent specialists familiar with Mercedes systems. Some retailers like Batteries Plus offer this service, according to one user on their blog.
  • If Not Registered: You may experience start-stop system issues, reduced electronic features (e.g., heated seats), and potential dashboard warnings

Why don't my Noco battery maintainers and chargers need to be told the age of the battery so they don't damage it?

Your charger is simply charging the battery. You set the charger to agm battery so the charger knows what charging cycle to use. You can still screw up charging a battery with your charger, example trying to charge a small lawn mower 12v 3ah agm battery. I just did it.

That’s for the W205 SAM module initialization. I didn’t see anything like that on W/X204. Did I miss it for 10 years? We had a number of these.

W206 definitely has it as do H/X247, although reset on the 247s is a simple one step task.

Yes above is for W205.

For the earlier model W204 no battery registration is needed.

So the car's battery management system is un-simply charging the battery? What kind of charger did you use with your lawn mower?

The cars energy management system has to charge the battery while running all the electrical functions of the car when the engine is running. The energy management system is constantly making adjustments on charging depending on various things like engine speed, battery charge, how many electronics in the car are being used like ac and headlights.

Your battery charger is just charging up the battery.

I have a Noco Genius 5 charger. My small 12v 3ah lawn mower battery was dead so I hooked up the charger then an hour later i started smelling rotten eggs and the battery was screaming hot. Pretty sure I fried it. The charger probably didnt know it was only a 3ah battery.
