Open Pore grain alignment?

Every time someone posts a picture of their open pore wood center console, the grain matches up between the console and the cup holder cover like in the pic of Stan's 2nd car below.

Am I the only one whose doesn't? Mine looks like the cup holder cover was mismatched with a different console during assembly. None of the grain lines up between the two.

Can't take a pic, as it is at the dealer right now getting the seat cover replacement.

Mine matches perfectly. Your's could certainly be mismatched parts which would be a ***** to fix because the whole center stack veneer would have to be changed.
Good Luck.

One of the things that impressed me was that the grain aligned.

One sheet of veneer is what is used before the cuts are made, so the grain should be continuous between all the sections. If your cup holder cover doesn't match, it was replaced at some point ... either at the factory or by the dealer.

This is mine. As I say, I was quite impressed by the pattern matching as you just never know how these things are made... well, you do if you do.

Still absolutely love the look of the open pore wood. Wish more manufacturers offered this as an option.

So the question is, can I complain about this? If the door color didn't match the fender color I would. Or is this too minor a complaint "my grain doesn't match" and I should suck it up and live with it?

I'd ask your dealer that question instead of the forum. Of course you can complain if it's an obvious fault that's not apparent on other vehicles. You're the customer putting down your hard earned $$. If it irks you, why put up with it?

The question you have to ask yourself is whether it's worth complaining about, because there will undoubtedly be some level of inconvenience involved in fixing it. I'd see how the customer service rep at the dealership responds. If they start rolling their eyes it might be best to leave it - on the other hand they could just say "yep, that's not right, we'll order you a new panel to fix it".... who knows.

Unfortunately not right now. Car is currently at the dealer getting the bleeding seat covers replaced after waiting over 3 months for the parts to arrive.

You might want to ask your service manager to take a look at the console and see what he thinks. If it is an obvious mismatch, I would think a new veneer assembly could be ordered and installed by the dealer. If the dealer agrees it is an issue, and is confident they can replace the wood, then let them do it.

Sorry about the poor quality pics. Took them while driving back from the dealer after getting my car, as night was rapidly approaching. That is a whole different ordeal. I love getting a scratched car back after getting warranty work performed (the second time it has happened! Two warranty visits, damage to my car both times.) My service adviser wasn't there to show this to, or to complain about the damage. I will be calling in on Monday. I guess I will need to find a new dealer though. I can't trust a place that repeatedly damages my car.

They scratched your car during service?! I would have refused to take the car back until they repaired to the same condition it was dropped off in. You are much calmer than I...

That's not a misalignment, that's a totally different piece of wood.

Hmm, as StanNH points out, the right (only?) way to do this is from one pice of wood, and such a mismatch suggests one pice got replaced after the initial production. If the dealer has damaged your car twice, what is the chance they broke the cup holder door?

Wild speculation, but not an implausible theory.

It was that way when I purchased it. I thought it was "normal". But once I started to see pictures of everyone else interior where the cup holder door matches the console, I knew something was wrong. Also, selling dealer is different than the service one (selling dealer is 20 miles further away). So if a change was made the service dealer is not responsible. Either the factory or the selling dealer screwed it up

I did.

My new center console wood. Now with matching grain. Took 3 weeks to arrive from Germany (why not Alabama?), and an hour for the tech at the new dealership to install. Matches up perfectly, and makes me happy every time I see it.

My original open pore wood didn't match but they had to replace it as it was damaged when they pulled the seats out to replace the MB Tek for the leaching problem. The new covers match up perfectly.

So after taking a close look at my wood grain trim compared to all others here, I've made a couple of observations:

1. While my trim aligns with the cupholder lid, the grain is full of 'knots' rather than the nice wavy pattern that most others have. Not a huge deal, but I think it's not as attractive as the others I've seen here.

2. I noticed that the trim on the main piece of the center console (not the cupholder lid) is actually two separate sheets of veneer and you can clearly see the line in the following pictures. Anyone else have this?
