the shop was recommended by my local Mercedes Benz dealer. They use a aftermarket shop for extra luxury stuff for Benz here in China. Its actually West Coast Customs division in Shanghai that did it for me.. Took 4 hrs to install.. Took a long time due to firmware update being slow with internet connection between China and Germany...
yes I was offered 2 options.
1 was an android switch box to make car play work with existing head unit. Still buggy but workable
cost around 500$
2 was to get a new head unit with car play cost around 900$
i went with option 2 and have car play that works 100%
Are both options official Mercedes solutions? Is the new head unit the bigger version in the new models or just the same ones with different programming?

option 1 is an android solution which isn’t made by Benz but an after market solution.
2nd is from Benz. Mine is made in Czech see photos enclosed
yep looks good. thanks!! yes it is true that different segments of world have different part numbers for same part. But usually there is only one digit that is different.
This confirms everything for me. SO all they did was change the card reader and radio? Anything else? did they change wiring from card reader to radio? What about backup camera? did they change that?

they didn’t change any wiring etc. Just the unit and card reader. Back up camera works just fine and wasn’t even touched during install.. everything works perfectly!

Can you tell us where we can get this head unit from? Can this be shipped? Also does it need coding to be done at a Benz dealer or can this be fixed by ourselves?

i bought mine from Westcoast customs in Shanghai. I can ask them if they can ship to US or maybe you can get from westcoast customs in USA.
The coding was done by Westcoast they have access to the Benz system to upgrade the unit

I am from melbourne, Australia. Not sure if we have westcoast here. Would appreciate if we know how much it costs for the headunit and card reader? I know you said your's cost 900$ but that included installing. What exactly do you mean by coding? You mean to say the headunit should be coded to our car's VIN number?

coding needs to be performed to link the head unit to your car and also to integrate and enable carplay.
I am not sure if the asia version head unit will work for you. it may work just fine. i know the USA part number is different.

Coding is the wrong term. Its firmware flash.
They an open some more menus. I got illumination as an aftermarket install... they had to open the software to access the illumination menu etc.
900$ was incl install... Keep in mind installs are damn cheap in china due low labor cost.

Visited the specialized Benz auto tech thats mentioned often here (dude is a guru) and found out theres currently a retrofit being specifically developed for those with NTG 5.5 COMAND systems (basically 2018 C class with the Multimedia package and bigger screen). Supposed to be ready to go in a few weeks. Cool thing is, theres no risk of voiding the warranty as its hidden away in the console but utilizes the same USB ports you'd normally use. It's basically programmed where you hold a particular button and carplay comes right up. Only annoyance is that it's not directly integrated into the Mercedes interface (this would require literally swapping out the whole radio, cutting wires, running upwards of 7 or 8k and voiding your warranty), which is not a huge deal to me. Just wanted to let you all know .

From middle 2017, W205 with MY808 and 522 has an option like '154' .
This 154 means that the manufacturer was changed from MELCO to PANASONIC, only for Entry models ( Audio20 ).
This new Panasonic Entry HU become NTG5s2 and has the same HW as Panasonic NTG5s1 from A, B, CLA, GLA, ML/GLE.
So, any W205, W253, V447 with Audio 20 can be retrofitted with new Entry HU. No extra harness, no new SD reader, only a new, genuine, no activated NTG5s1 Garmin SD Card for offline maps.
Any software attempts on old HU ( from MELCO ) has nothing to do with Carplay/Android Auto.

i have found the wiring from the headunit to USB must be replaced with new part number and usb hub or the wiring must be changed. I could not get carplay to work with old usb hub. How did you get to work? Did you change wiring?

I am writing in response to your enquiry regarding Apple CarPlay and your C-Class Model. I can confirm that C-Class Models post June 2017 are compatible with Apple CarPlay (this can be found on page 67 of the June 2017 brochure and page 35 of the June 2018 brochure). It would appear that the Apple website listing compatible Mercedes-Benz vehicles is out of date.
The reason previous C-Class Models were not fitted with Apple CarPlay was neither a software nor a hardware issue. At the time your car was produced it was simply not an optional extra for C-Class vehicles. However, as stated above, our current C-Class Models do offer the possibility of integrating your Apple products.
As per your request, your feedback on this issue has been escalated to the highest level. I understand your frustration regarding this matter, and I can assure you that your feedback will be taken seriously by Mercedes-Benz Customer Service.

When Apple's next IOS update comes out Carplay is supposed to support Google maps and Waze. Will your Carplay box support those in Carplay mode or only using Mirorlink?
