Head-Up Display currently not available across all 2017 W205 C-class models
I ended up dropping the HUD from my order. I asked my dealer to check on the availability issue, and his contact at MBUSA mentioned the recent earthquakes in Japan impacting their parts vendor causing "an undetermined time delay." Given this scenario, I'm not willing to endure a frustrating waiting game wondering when the car will actually get built. I'm really bummed about this, but not bummed enough to risk getting the car possibly early next year.
In lieu of the HUD, I did add the Parking Assist Package to get the 360 camera view, mainly for the practical use of being able to avoid curb scrapes on the wheels and front bumper.

I don't have a build date, but I was planning to do the same - follow up with the dealer on the availability and see if it can be added. But my risk is that the car may go into production in July or August and then I'm SOL for the HUD.
In my experience the camera is definetely being used to detect signs.
When dynamic speed limits are shown above the road they are picked up by the camera also. It can even detect different signs under the speed limit signs.
When signs are not detected for a while, the system seems to fall back on data from the navi.
The recognition is limited to speed limits and signs that its not allowed to overtake.
I must say i am from the Netherlands so in North America the behavior might be different.
I love the HUD b.t.w.

Gerrit

Just spoke with my dealer, and he stated that HUD will probably not be available to order until December. Take it for what its worth.
The initial delay was already until August based on the DOG. Then it got pushed to September and now December. Hopefully that is a worst case scenario.

I totally agree.
My wife has HUD on her 2014 328i...big deal...I just don't get the attraction either. Not only is it an expensive option, the front windshield is more expensive come replacement time...that and you see the big ugly cut-out on the dash from the outside.
As for the people that say it helps with NAV, are you kidding me? Between the main center display and the woman's voice telling you to take the turn, you actually need yet another source on the windshield as well?

I agree with you 100%. At first I thought it's one of those "cool" features. But after using it for a week straight I'll never buy a car without it. Nav, caller ID, xm radio stations, speed limits, etc. It's fantastic. I don't have it on the Mercedes but I did get It on the BMW.
I will never get another car without it. It is one of the most useful features on the car. It is extremely helpful with the NAV because it shows you what lane to be in during fast moving traffic situations without having to take your eyes off the road. I absolutely love it!
So if there is no HUD available and I skip it on the order.. But get the driver assistance package, is there anywhere else in either the comand screen or the gauge display where I can view the posted speed limit? Or is the HUD the only place that info is displayed in the USA?
