I ended up dropping the HUD from my order. I asked my dealer to check on the availability issue, and his contact at MBUSA mentioned the recent earthquakes in Japan impacting their parts vendor causing "an undetermined time delay." Given this scenario, I'm not willing to endure a frustrating waiting game wondering when the car will actually get built. I'm really bummed about this, but not bummed enough to risk getting the car possibly early next year.

In lieu of the HUD, I did add the Parking Assist Package to get the 360 camera view, mainly for the practical use of being able to avoid curb scrapes on the wheels and front bumper.

My plan is to leave my order as is (with a Sept scheduled production date), but try to add the HUD as soon as it again becomes available, even if it means a later production date.

I don't have a build date, but I was planning to do the same - follow up with the dealer on the availability and see if it can be added. But my risk is that the car may go into production in July or August and then I'm SOL for the HUD.

The recognition is limited to speed limits and signs that its not allowed to overtake.

I must say i am from the Netherlands so in North America the behavior might be different.

I love the HUD b.t.w.

I saw this video from someone also from the Netherlands. Here you can see what you described about HUD with sign detection.

Just spoke with my dealer, and he stated that HUD will probably not be available to order until December. Take it for what its worth.

The initial delay was already until August based on the DOG. Then it got pushed to September and now December. Hopefully that is a worst case scenario.

As for the people that say it helps with NAV, are you kidding me? Between the main center display and the woman's voice telling you to take the turn, you actually need yet another source on the windshield as well?
I will never get another car without it. It is one of the most useful features on the car. It is extremely helpful with the NAV because it shows you what lane to be in during fast moving traffic situations without having to take your eyes off the road. I absolutely love it!

I do like the navi turn by turn on the HUD. That way when it's taking me to an abandoned industrial building instead of the mall I programmed it for, I'm less likely to miss a turn.

I agree with you 100%. At first I thought it's one of those "cool" features. But after using it for a week straight I'll never buy a car without it. Nav, caller ID, xm radio stations, speed limits, etc. It's fantastic. I don't have it on the Mercedes but I did get It on the BMW.

So if there is no HUD available and I skip it on the order.. But get the driver assistance package, is there anywhere else in either the comand screen or the gauge display where I can view the posted speed limit? Or is the HUD the only place that info is displayed in the USA?

Also, by looking through the large glass panel on the front of the car, the analog versions of the signs are displayed.

What screen is it on? I can't find it in the distronic, nav, speed, telephone, trip, or any other menus in the gauge cluster?

I've already given you the answer twice in the other forum where you asked the exact same question.

Perhaps a telegram would work better?
