Autoflex coating, DIY attempt

It's been more than a year since I vinyl wrapped my car white. It looks great and I love the idea that the OEM paint is being protected while I get to have a "new" car. But the white is getting old and seeing the other guy's car being done in autoflex, I wanted to try it myself. This would be my first attempt. Of course, I'm not gonna do that on my C300 when I don't know exactly what the outcome would be. So I tried it on my BMW....well, sort of

lol, i unwrapped mine, and it was very easy! I'm going a new color in a few weeks, but this time in high gloss vrs satin finish. after peeling it and seeing the fresh paint underneath, im a true believer. I do recommend a professional application vrs Autoflex, especially with the clear coat. I know its just a toy but there is a lot of "texture" it seems, which mine didnt have. good luck with what you decide to do

Check reviews on Amazon. Universal complaints of blobby output from the sprayer, and permanent damage to the car's clear coat when removed. Also issues with durability. One guy said despite following the prep process religiously on his wheels, the product fell off intact and almost immediately.

Hehe. It was a guinea pig. I was testing out different mixes and different spray methods to see what it'd look like. The texture you see is the result of mixing the flakes and the pearl together, which I was not supposed to. But I did it anyway to see if I could achieve the color I want. That was the whole purpose of testing.

not sure if you're referring to autoflex, Mike, but there's no review on Amazon. It is sold only by 3 authorized distributors, and Amazon is not one of them. I haven't had time to check durability on my "BMW" yet, but one of the guys here had it done professionally and it looks pretty damn good.

The moment I pointed the spray gun at the car, I was like "holy sh*t, it's a 50K car. I never painted a car before. I never used a spray gun before. Do I even know what I'm doing?"....but it was too late. There was no going back, lol.

The car is black originally. I wrapped it white. Now I'm taking it off and painting it a different color.

Awesome! How much did it cost you? It's nice to know I'm not the only lone wolf out there who wants to change color.

That was yours? That looked good. But i thought it was done recently. You didn't just dropped 2300 for only a couple months?

The color pigment took forever to get here. But it finally got here. Here is the final product. I learned a lot from this experiment. Next time, it will definitely be better :-)

Here, I call it California Gold Rush

So you end up just peeling this stuff off when you're done? And it costs $2,000+?

That was the whole point, to stand out. Every car these days is either black or white. I want something that isn't like anybody else. I was stuck in traffic the other day and almost half of people in the opposite direction stared at my car. Some even looked at me and gave me a thumb up :-)

yep. It also protects the paint while it's on. I did it myself so it costs me only around $400.

Why not cover one bird with two stones and paint over the wrap?

BTW, AMG badge on the car? Come on now....
