DIY for replacing steering wheel?

Hey guys, I did a search on this forum but couldn't find a proper DIY tutorial on removing our steering wheel (gonna guess that putting a new one on will just be the reverse of removal).

I ordered a new sport steering wheel wrapped in alcantara off eBay. I've already found tutorials on removing the Airbag. What other steps are required to remove the steering wheel itself after getting rid of the Airbag? I know it's possible because there's other people who've done that on this forum.

Can someone weigh in who's done this before? Thanks!

I don't have a DIY but have replaced many steering wheels on past cars. The biggest thing I can say is to make sure the car is parked straight and you align the new steering wheel correctly. It is also recommended to disconnect the battery when messing around with airbag. I believe there is also torque spec for tightening the bolt that keeps steering wheel mounted. Good luck! Post your before and after pictures.

Yeah, so far I've only found a DIY for the W204, nothing for our cars. I have the C205 (the coupe version), but it should be the same.

Getting the wheel today, so I'll make sure to take pictures and post a DIY myself once I'm done with the process.

Whelp, I got the aribag off without a hitch, but man that steering wheel bolt is locked on SOLID. Literally refuses to budge even though my car is only 4 months old (6 months if you want to count from production).

Gonna hit up Home Depot tomorrow and get a breaker bar/3 ft piping and try to knock that thing loose. If that doesn't work, then it's time to go bust out an impact gun. I'll have a full DIY one I finish the process.

You need to buy or borrow a steering wheel puller. The wheel is splined onto the shaft. Comes right off with a puller.

Hey Mike, I was looking at the W204 guide to removing the steering wheel and it seems to call for a simple M10 hex wrench to unscrew the bolt. Here's a picture of my wheel:

Does this look like something that I need a steering wheel puller for? Just double checking because I was able to get an M10 hex nut in there and it's a perfect fit. It's just stuck.

The nut has to come off, and then you'd use the puller to get the wheel off the shaft itself.

I see. So you can't just pull the old steering wheel off once the bolt is off like they mention in this how-to?

Went ahead and finally cracked that sucker loose. Use a 3/8 drive 10mm hex wrench, attached to a 6" extension, then a 12" breaker bar and some 24" metal piping. I had to firmly grip the wheel with my left hand and heave as hard as I could on the metal tubing lever. That broke the damn nut loose.

Once that was done, I just unscrewed the nut out and pulled the old steering wheel out without a hitch. Popped the new one back in, torqued that nut to about 75 ft-lbs aaaaaaaand I realized that my non-AMG airbag won't fit with the new AMG wheel.

The only difference I can see between a non-AMG bag and an AMG bag online is that the front cover leather extends lower and around the bottom on the non-AMG bag. Gonna try to trim that section off and see if it'll fit. If not, time to grab an AMG airbag off eBay!

I guess you'll find out. If it puts up a fight after the bolt is out, use a puller.

did you finished it? Did you buy brand new AMG steering wheel or not? I heard that for upgrade needs to be brand new otherwise will not let you code the control unit, not sure if is truth.

Sorry. I misread the first post and thought he was planning on using a breaker bar on the wheel vs the nut.

No worries guys. I was able to break the center bolt loose with a breaker bar and just pull the steering wheel out. I managed to install the new steering wheel but my current airbag isn't compatible/won't fit. Reason being, I'm coming from a non-sport package C300 which has the round steering wheel. The airbag from that does NOT work with the flat bottom/AMG wheel. Ordered a new AMG airbag which should be here tomorrow so hopefully my car will be up and running then.

As for the control module, looks like I need to swap my contact plate from the old wheel to the new wheel because it's coded specifically for the car that it's installed in. My new wheel came with instructions on how to do that so I'll be following the procedure today after work.

Will post a thorough DIY once I finish the entire project.

is it possible that you can just change the airbag cover to the stitched leather look? (ie, avoiding to buy an entire airbag?

I was trying to contact Chris but I couldnt.

I have installed this steering wheel and this column (clock string). Everything works (buttons, lights, etc) but the paddles shifts don't. As I was reading down all your replies I am thinking about ordering the A212 900 29 24 that a mate bought. But I want first that whoever solved this problem confirm this is the way to solve this problem.

Extra info: Don't know if this could help, but there's a little red man sitting in front of a red ball in my cluster. I think it's an airbag error.

did you solve your problem...I'm very frustrated atm trying to find the right steering wheel and column spring with the paddle shifters...went to garage just now they tried to put the wheel and and no buttons would work but they didn't have paddle shifters on them anyway...feels like a waste journey just want to upgrade my wheel

Hi
Firstly do you have a C Class or E class, it really doesn't matter, what does is if your vehicle is a sedan or estate. From your picture it appears that you have a clock spring (also referred to as a combination switch) that is found on an estate or hatch back on account of the stalk that has the regulator/switch for a rear wiper. Clock springs are very unique and you have to make sure that it is compatible with the type of vehicle you have, that is if you have a sedan you can't just put in one that is for a estate or hatch back as that is where your problems start.

Also read comment #351.
Hope that this helps
