I don’t think he was trolling so no need to get your panties in a bunch. I too am sorry this happened to you and appreciate you letting us know. This might help another owner thinking about adding these mods. Most of us don’t want to do the mods because of this thread. Tread carefully folks.

help me understand how you modded the hell out of your car resulting in piston damage and this is somehow not your fault, but Mercedes benz’s?

Real mature here, guys..

I would caution against too many mods for the M274. Whoever said it was designed by Mitsubishi is wrong. It was designed by Mercedes, is produced in Germany and in Tennessee and used in some Infiniti models. There were clearly some defective materials at work here with these cracked pistons (assuming you didn't mod it), but given the number of cars using the M274 - the percentage is probably very, very small. If you're out of warranty you do not have legal standing to "start a lawsuit".

It sucks but try to keep a grasp on reality.

Mercedes won't pay for this... and this is going to cost me $10,000.... for a car that's fully optioned and MSRP at $52,000K this is pathetic. I will never buy a mercedes again.

Mercedes must stand for this wrist pin issue or i will start a LAWSUIT.

I see. So you ran a meth kit and big turbos and now you're going to cry about it when components fail. Man up!

For the record, the OP was running stock and had a piston failure. Later, this guy comes and craps all over the thread when his heavily modded motor ate itself.

As I see it, W205 Merc has three options:
Continue to be a whiny b|+<h.
Replace the motor and move on.
Ditch the C300 and go with a platform that will handle more engine mods

Agreed. I think the M274 is already pretty wrung out. Like any other modern FI motor, you can get bigger numbers out of it with more boost, bigger snails, or meth. However, the M274 is not sufficiently "overbuilt" enough from stock to handle all the extra powder.

2017 C300 Piston cracked 60 K miles

Hi all. My 2017 is up to date on all maintenance which has been performed by MB dealership. No changes have been made to this vehicle since I purchased it brand new from Mercedes. As I merged onto freeway, check engine light came on and lost all power last Friday. MB dealership says it’s a cracked piston and will fix it under my extended warranty as it has 60K miles. Will need to pay approximately $130 out of pocket. My question for you all is once the work is completed, is this likely to occur again? Any insight would be much appreciated as I don’t know anything about cars much less engines 😂. Thanks everyone!

2017 C300 cracked piston problems

My 2017 C300 started Jerking and lost power and had a ton of white smoke coming out the exhaust last weekend as I was getting on the freeway. Had it towed to Mercedes and this is what they said ---

☆"Hey Honey, so looks like your probably going to need a new engine!! Still confirming but looks like one of the pistons cracked. You're under warranty so its totally covered"

Then today I get this message---
"Hey Honey just wanted to give you an update. It turns out they don't have to replace the whole engine. They are replacing the turbocharger and they have to replace one of the the pistons"

My Response,--. To be honest I do not feel confident in that repair. What kind of warranty is Mercedes willing to put on the engine once the repair is performed. There could be underlining problems as a result of that day when the car broke down. After some research and speaking with the other service centers "SD Mercedes, MB El Cajon" I would feel more confident and safe to have that engine replaced. (MB El Cajon said they are replacing one of those engine a week ).

Then I got this- rI understand but nothing is wrong with the engine. We replaced the engines sometimes as well but in this case there is no damage to the cylinder sidewalls so there is no need to replace the whole engine, only the piston was cracked. That does cause underlying damage to the turbocharger as well which is why we are replacing that too. Unfortunately mercedes makes dealerships prove every warranty repair we do is needed so they will only allow us to replace what is damaged. The warranty is the same 4 year 50,000 warranty that came with the car at time of purchase, no extension or anything when a warranty repair is done
Any advice how I should address this situation?

I liked the hey honey response 😎
I think you are lucky your car is still under warranty. Imagine you have to pay for a whole engine? Can you take it to one of these service centre like El Cajon and get them to replace the whole engine?

I agree with Andy, if this dealer won't do it I would have it towed to another M-B facility. There are so many qualified dealers in the SD area I wouldn't take this lone shop's opinion as fact. A ton of white smoke from the exhaust also indicates possible head gasket blown which can cause head warpage or other issues if the engine overheated at all as a result.

Thank you for your response, My concern is I only have 1000 miles left on my warranty and after everything I have read that describes the same situation with this same engine I am concerned that this will happen again and that I will be past the warranty and have to pay out of pocket when I could have had it completely replaced when it first happened and not have to worry about this or any other problems arising after my warranty expires and have to pay for those repairs as well. Is it more lucrative for the mechanic's to make repairs on the engine than replacing it with a new one?

Hi, thank you for the response. I was not aware I could do that.. Thank you I'm curious what is standard protocol for the service center when there is a cracked piston?

You are right about your concerns. A descent dealer would have changed the engine immediately. Trust me if your car was out of warranty you will receive one single phone call from your dealer saying hey honey you need to buy a new engine 😁

The question is what if the other pistons of your existing engine also cracked? Who will bear the cost? Dealers care about one single thing is how to fix a car under warranty at the lowest cost possible. So push back and escalate and consider the other dealer you mentioned. But can you guarantee that this other dealer will change the engine?

Hi Honey, though I live in Orange County now El Cajon is my hometown and I know people who get their cars serviced there. I have always heard good things about MB El Cajon's service department and the dealership is a relative new and very modern facility. .

I would highly recommend you get your engine evaluated there. A repair is likely adequate but an engine failure is a big deal and MB owes its customer a replacement. Their warranties are built into the cars price, its not like they are doing it for free (though they like to give the impression they are).

Sorry Honey, you are not going to talk Mercedes into replacing an entire engine if they've decided they can repair it. You will waste a lot of time/energy on this for the end result to be the same. You say "What if another piston cracks?" OK where does the what if game end? What if they replace it and the new engine suffers a piston crack? What if? Anything can happen.

Let them fix your car and move on.

I had the exact same thing happen to me last month. I bought a preowned 2017 C300 30k miles on it still under factory warranty. Im in Los Angeles. The engine started losing power and wobbling on the highway and its scary. Argued with an MB rep over phone but to no effect...still they replaced only the piston and not the whole engine. Planning to call them this week to as them a reason for the pistion failure in writing. Im thinking they could be a lawsuit here somewhere. Getting half assed repairs for a $60K car doesnt feel fair. Its a scary experience to have your engine go out on you on the highway. I think if we deal with them individually they are taking advantage of us. If we group together then its a lot more scarier for them. What are the steps needed for a class action lawsuit? Any thoughts?
