Angry How rough is the shake when your car wakes (starts) out of eco start/stop?

My car seems to shake roughly when it starts again out of ECO start/stop. Is this normal?

When the engine shuts down at the stop light I never feel the change (it is very smooth), but when it wakes up (starts again), there is always a few seconds of rough jerk and shake. Sometimes it freaks me out when I forget.

How rough is the restart in your W205? Do you feel your engine restart? Is it very rough shaking?

As as test:
  • Start the car and drive around
  • Place it in SPORT mode
  • Stop and Press the brake until "HOLD" appears.
  • Wait 20 seconds.
  • Now flip it into "SPORT+"
Is there a rough 2 - 3 seconds of shaking when the engine starts?

My car only has 28k miles. Maybe I need new plugs??

Mine is a bit on the rough side (definitely not as smooth as the TT 2.7 V6 in my prior F150), and I've noticed a rough idle for a few seconds when it starts back up. Need to make a svc appt for it, just haven't had the time recently.

A bit of "Engine Shutter" is normal on start-up - and frankly on the MB's it can be a bit less than EC-Restart on other brands - in essence the fuel injection is "jump-starting" then engine..

The fact is - for anyone who has purchased and installed Vladimir's ECO OBD Frankly - anyone who order's Vladimir's OBD ECO reprograms the ECO the way you want it :

.

AFAIC, the default ECO engine shut-off a serious hazard. I live outside town and to get to my home, I must turn left across fast oncoming traffic. The last thing I want to feel when I begin my turn when a logging truck is bearing down on me at 70+ MPH is my engine restarting. I'll order Vlad's OBD if I find more positive independent reviews. He also offers to program it to activate Carplay/Android. Is that an inactive function that's standard in the Audio 20/Burmeister head?

Mine is pretty rough too. Occasionally makes the car rock for a second or two after it starts back up. Was the same before wrist pin repair as well.

Nice plug.

The issue isn't actually caused by ECO start/stop, it is just easier to notice it when the engine is off and you are sitting at a light.

There is a button to turn it off BEFORE you attempt your "dangerous" turn. Also SPORT+ mode turns it off and will let you accelerate faster.

I will compare it to a 2018 loaner next time I am at the dealer.

Vladimir's OBD Eco programmer is righteous - because it changes the programming so you can have ECO do what YOU want it to... if ECO is Off when the car is turned off, when car is turned back on ECO stays off for ALL modes... and then YOU have the option to use console button to activate ECO if you are in stop-n-go traffic...

You message Vladimir your VIN# - and he will confirm back to you what he can do for your MB - and Vladimir is the most righteous coder for this stuff - straight up guy.

"Independent review" I guess is "Boy-Code" for "I need to be convinced to spend $129"... what you do is up to you.. about 26 customers of mine who had earnest objections about ECO the MB way are all Vladimir happy customers....

The point is that the default setting should be "off". It shouldn't be necessary to actively disable a nuisance.

Lets say the feature is designed for 1 million people and only 10 people find it a nuisance, what then?

1. Provide an easy way for the 10 to shut it off (at will)
2. Redesign it for 10 out of 1 million people?

You can't please everyone at the same time.

If the default was off, you would have 10 people complaining that the default was not ON.

It's just changing a few lines of code in the firmware to make it convenient, not a redesign of any hardware.

when compare to the c300 loaner, my c450 is less noticeable, like half noticeable.

i like it to turn off engine when not moving like waiting at mcdonald drivethr or stuck in freeway traffic, sometimes i run the gas til the last gallon.

Yep. The 4 cyl is always gonna be rougher on startup. I was in a few hundred mile 2019 c300 loaner. It felt rougher than my 2015 c400.

The "feature" is there to improve fuel economy. And they're not worried about the consumer. They're concerned with EPA fuel efficiency standards (Corporate Average Fuel Economy). Therefore, the default will always be "on".
So, the real winners are the AMG drivers who's cars can get lower fuel economy at our expense. ;-)

Since i got my car last may I had been stupidly driving in sport mode almost all the time. My MPG was around 23, which was close to what my W204 got (no eco start/stop).

A few weeks ago I decided to use C mode for an entire highway trip and got 31 MPG.

MB has to comply with European standards, and while owning my GLA250 saw on their forum a comment that the European plan doesn't allow for the owner to choose to permanently not use Eco. MB may foresee that we will be using Eco a lot here pretty soon, and isn't interested in our convenience. Many US cars now have Eco and lots of people don't like it. Corporate MPG is the name of the game. If you don't want it, include shut off during your start up routine, while checking mirrors, gauges. My GLA250 was a bit rough when leaving Eco, but the C300 is very smooth, almost not noticeable. This is also the case when leaving Hold. I generally drive in Comfort mode. If you can trust the onboard computer, overall mpg is about 29. This is better than the GLA250 was. I always use 91 octane high test, which is the standard here for high test.

To address benzdude initial question, on my 2019 E450 CAB it is virtually unnoticeable. Unless I have the top down, only then do I even hear it restart. It's pretty smooth with no shake whatsoever. Maybe just like everything else, it's more refined on the newer cars.

Mine is only problematic if I'm on an incline or I have it in Sport mode (so it is starting in 1st gear instead of 2nd).

The way that EO-Start works - the Mercedes V6 & V8 will be "smoother" for ECO Start - and in the new ECO Boost powertrain's premiering in other models 1st ECO Start is virtually seamless.

Yes - ECO Start is more noticeable on T4's - and yes a Euro thing after the German's measured big data that found up to over 25% of urban commute "time" (not distance) can be spent at a standing stop whether due to traffic density or traffic light stops.

If ECO bothers you in any way - OBD programming can alleviate a lot of your mental/emotional internal resistance.

Had a '19 GLA250 for a loaner while my C was in for some warranty work (pano roof & rough idle after start/stop).
The GLA is pretty seamless.

My C had a rough idle when restarted from auto-stop while not moving, lugging/surging feeling. And, it had a bit of fuel smell in the garage if I went to put something in the car, then went back inside, and came back out a few minutes later.

So far, very smooth restart with auto-s/s. Will see how it behaves through the week.

Hi,
I got diesel engine (1.6) and I have even worst problem. This is no happening every time, but occasionally and randomly. When engine is starting from being off by start and stop system my rpms are at half, engine is running like not on all cylinders. This is happening for at least 10-15 sec. Nothing is working - manual gear change (7g tronic), acceleration pedal is not active, changing to P or N, agility select (changing to different setting from ECO to Sport). Only waiting (after certain of time rpms are going back at regular and I can start to drive) or turning off engine and back on by start button. It happened twice when engine just shut off while being in this situation. It is annoying but dangerous as well especially standing at traffic lights and trying to move when green.
I was already three times at the dealer to see what is the issue and each time I was informed that there is absolutely no faults at the system and they couldn't reproduce the issue when they were testing the car (two different dealers). So no risk and I decided to turn Start/Stop system off just before each drive. I like the system (had it before in Audi) but I will not take a risk being at middle of crossing and this sh** will happen.
In my opinion in my case there is something wrong with the the start/stop or kind of sensors but having no faults it is difficult to find the issue. 75 kkm on dash and this is happening since I got the car.
