Post your panoramic roof problems and fixes!

I’m having an issue with my panoramic sunroof.

The shades open and close correctly. When I try to open the roof to position one (tilt) only the back left side starts to lift, (the back right seems jammed and won’t lift up). Whilst it is trying to open, there is a grinding noise from the motor/gears. I then press the close button and it closes again correctly. I’ve scanned for faults in the closed and half open positions with no faults detected.

I’ve been quoted £2000 by two local garages for parts and labour to replace the various parts when the roof hasn’t even been stripped to verify the issue (apparently the whole roof has to be stripped and the front seats taken out to inspect.

Please post your problems and fixes here to help me and others who experience it, thanks!

Can I assume the vehicle is out of warranty? If not then it should be free.
Without even looking, yes, that price seems high you need to take it to someone that is familiar with the sunroof.

Hi mate, yes it’s out of warranty. I know it’s high that’s why I want to see other people’s experiences. I’m hoping it’s just a snapped cable which costs just £17 from the dealer. I don’t fancy paying £204 an hour without an idea of what it could be.

The sunroof is not necessarily proprietary to MB, there are a couple of manufacturers that sell the units to car manufacturers. Having said that the basic unit is probably all the same and the differences are in the controls and actions. Sounds like you have a simple mechanical problem, broken part, something jammed in the mechanism, or even lubrication. If you're not getting the results of "cooperation" from the dealer you need to search out an independent shop that is experienced in sunroofs. I doubt seriously that the it'll end up in a complete removal of the sunroof at the price you got quoted, that's ridiculous. Not sure where you but google sunroofs in your area and then go in a have a talk. You can even probably get reviews of the various shops but talk the reviews with a grain of salt. My best judgement is when you personally visit the shop and you look around,, is it clean, organization, do they seem to know what they're doing, not just some fancy salesman.

i have the same problem with mine, it’s stripped the gear and I darent even try and open it... really not impressed with the quality of this car!

Both parcel shelf guide motors have thrown out their spring type things, the bonnet latches have failed three times and it’s developed a weird acceleration issue, when it feels like it is doing a dpf regen where the throttle response goes, until it hits 2000rpm then takes off like a scalded cat and slams the next gear in like a learner...

feels like I have a Friday afternoon car

Well mine is in the shop Dealer right now for that plus shot engine mounts and PCV system issue throwing CEL. After my extended warranty kicks in I still have to pay $3200 out of pocket for all those fixes (2015 with 61k miles on it) The service advisor told me the sunroof alone is $3500 for new rails and new motor all have to be ordered from Germany they have had my car a month now. But he told me they have to remove the interior headliner and takes 2 people to remove the glass to replace the rails and motor. Mine wouldn't close unless I held the button then it would fall/clunck as it dropped down onto the track and didn't seal well as I could hear whistle as I drove. I did buy the car in February 2019 and despite those things I love the car over my 2011 VW Jetta I had. Just never heard of a car having shot engine mounts with only 60K on it?

Do you have the Mercedes Extended Limited Warranty? if so,

Which of the repairs aren't covered by the extended warranty resulting in you being responsible for $3,200?

A gaggle of MB's
In the US - only New Car Warranty or Extended New Car Warranty will cover the sunroof - CPO warranty or Extended CPO warranty Mercedes kicks it back and won't cover - which frankly is the sh*ts in my opinion.

W205's - to help prevent prevent the problem the sunroof system "should" be lubricated with spray PTFE at each 1Yr/10K service - and lubricated if the "auxiliary battery (capacitor) gets replaced and needs to be to restore memory/stop setting on the sunroof - but the Mercedes maintenance schedule only calls for "check sunroof" - and when auxiliary capacitor is replaced does not call for sunroof or window resetting

My plastic piece on the sunroof rail was broken shortly after the dealer replaced the auxiliary battery. Are you saying the start/stop settings of the sunroof were reset and needs reprogramming? Probably this was not done. I also think CPO warranty should cover it.

Say that your pano roof doesn’t function properly and then somehow the actual glass breaks, would MB then fix the rails, clips, etc. once the glass is replaced by insurance? Just a thought.

I replaced the aux capacitor assy myself but have not used the pano roof yet are you saying that the software for the pano now needs to be reset?
Many people have had aux battery malfunction and the capacitor assy replaced I wonder how this also correlates with the many pano roof failures?

They would always be good to have due to all the problems with the Pano, so if you have them please post them up.

I have a pano rattle in the back right corner, ever since i got my car. Sounds like a loose plastic part. It goes away if i open the pano.

I can hear it when my music is off on rough roads. It drives me nuts. *turns up bass*

I might attempt to remove the glass this summer (since it looks fairly easy)

If you’re in/near Westchester maybe I can lend you a hand with that glass.

have you tried asking MB to goodwill repair it? There's an LI about it and everything.

The PCV issue is just a cold weather thing I wouldn't even mess with it

I just got my 2015 back form dealer for both rail replacements. similar to this (https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/...f=23&t=1686031). the left side was stuck in the tilt position, and nothing moved. The dealer was able to replace both rails only, saved te glass, motor, and roller blinds (all were concerns initially). They cut me a deal since I have put less than 1500 miles on the car since I purchased it from them. I paid $2089 for the parts and labor.

Since the repair was made at a dealer, using OEM parts, I now have a 2-year warranty on the sunroof at any dealer in the country.

Is that true? I’ve had it pop up and go away. I really couldn’t find much info on the PCV issue
