C class power tailgate won't open fully
After dropping off a passenger who tried to manually close the tailgate despite my saying it was powered, the tailgate no longer opens fully. Having followed the (somewhat limited) advice from the on-board computer about it, the thing still stops a few inches short of fully open. Has he knackered the mechanism or is there still hope? You'd think it would be robust enough to resist events like this but it looks like another visit to the garage I guess.

I had this issue and it was a massive headache. Take it to the dealer and tell them about it.
Best thing to do is show them that it does not open fully with a press of a button. Mine personally would open just barely then with a second press then would open fully.
It will be replaced under warranty, if not they should fix it out of courtesy. (depends on dealer)

Is it like MB SUVs? Where you can manually move the decklid or tailgate then push and hold the open/close button to change the desired height? Mine doesn't have that feature but just a thought.

Before you take into a dealer check your headunit under car settings, there is a feature you can turn on/off where the trunk doesn't come up all the way. I'm really not sure the usefulness of this feature but I've always had mine turned off.

I bought the car used from the MB dealer and it's out of the one year warranty they gave. I guess that's my next stop and hope they don't hit me with too big a bill.

I didn't remember seeing that option so I've just checked and it is not there on our car. I guess they are continually changing these little features over time. Thanks anyway.

Don't think so and, having phoned the garage, they've told me to bring the car in for a 'complete reset' whatever that means.

If the headroom in your garage is too low, you can set the opening of the tailgate so that it doesn't hit.
