Sqeaky noise from the steering wheel and a quote from MB
Hi nice people.
my c class recently developed a noise when turning the steering wheel.
Visited MB garage and they said a lower shaft of steering wheel would need to be changed and quoted £500! (Inc labor, part and 2-yr warranty).
Is this a fair price and would it really need to be replaced?
Video link is attached below for your advice too.
Thank you

When you go to a dentist and he finds you have a cavity do you then go to a blacksmith for a second opinion or go back to the dentist for repair

The noise isn't actually coming from the steering wheel even though it may sound like, it comes from where the steering column runs through a rubber bush or similar in the engine bay. A copious amount of WD40 squirted down the steering column should fix it. Did you find that the noise only started as the weather got colder?

Which side of the firewall are you suggesting as the place to start with WD-40?

The engine bay, just spray liberally on as much of the steering column as you can see and turn the wheel lock to lock when you've finished.

Have exactly this issue, presumably due to lack of use during covid/lockdown.
Did you manage to resolve it? Is it possible to access the right part from the engine bay from above or is a pit/ramp needed? Would be awesome to have a photo!
Is standard wd40 the best thing for this or would something like lithium grease be better/last longer?
It's so annoying when the dealer/garage jumps straight to replacing parts that probably won't even solve this, yet i bet if you'd just driven off the forecourt with an approved used that started squeaking they'd spend the 5 seconds to grease it up and send you on your way!

WD40 was all I had to hand. Starting at the bulkhead locate the steering column and spray generously with a lubricant and follow it down, it will eventually work its way in if you turn the steering wheel a few times.

Seems the problem with a grease is trying to get it to run into the parts that need lubricating so a spray is needed. That being said, I'm wondering if this may fair a bit better than standard wd40?
Cheers!

Thanks Chris. I'm thinking of using this:
