Engine light on (a month of ownership)

maybe my car wanted to surprise me for our first month together.
1,700 miles on the odo, and first yellow engine light already.
no idea what it is, I’ll stop at the dealership on my way to work tomorrow. Car seems to run fine, hopefully it’s nothing.

140k miles with my A7 and I’ve never seen that light, not even once.
so far Audi 1 - Mercedes 0

One common and easily fixed cause is that the fuel cap is not tightly closed (or faulty).
So, have you recently filled up gas to your baby? If yes, remove and then put the cap back and make sure it is closed properly and tightly.

This morning the light was still there and after a mile or so it turned off by itself.
Car is running fine.
If I took the car to the dealership would they be able to see the record of the error or does the light need to be on in order for them to troubleshoot it?

Most likely the code will be stored. Did you re-tighten the fuel cap? If so that may be why the light went away.

this seems common on the w206 - I wouldn't be worried about it

hey hey! Loving it. It's an impressive package. I also had an engine light for a day and it went away. Many of us have had this happen and then go away. Car drove completely normal during the error being displayed. Wasn't before or after any significant unusual variable.

Did you have a chance to scan it and see what it might be, curious what the stored code says however minor.

No, Friday I really didn't have time to go to the dealership. I called my agent there and he said that they cannot see the code if the light is not on, but I call it BS.

The codes are there. You should buy an OBD2 reader with Bluetooth for your phone. You can pull and save the codes yourself. Of course the numbers will be slightly different versus what the dealer sees, but it will prove that they’re there even after the light goes off, which it is designed to do after three restarts if it is relatively minor. Any check engine light is serious, though.

Good advice if OP didn't want to wait till the appointment. I mean, curiosity killed the cat.

Update - They couldn't see anything at the dealership when they connected the computer. No idea.

Buy an OBD2 Bluetooth code reader so next time it happens, you can pull the codes yourself and call BS to the dealer if they say there’s no codes. Any check engine should store a code. I’m sure they already erased it.

I would make an appointment and tell them about the stored codes or wait until the check engine light comes on again within a few weeks, because it will. However, like before, it will go off again after three restarts. Take a picture of the light and take a screenshot of the OBD scanner and show them to your service advisor.

Was this before or after tinting the windows? Does it correlate with that in any way? Just thinking that they may have disconnected the battery. That controller doesn't look anywhere near a source of water from this post:

I got the same codes on my brand new 2023 S500 and I never tinted my windows. No correlation.

I tinted the windows the first week of April, the engine light came up on 4/27, it's not correlated.
Again, car is working just fine now.

Let us know if the light comes in again (it will). Take a picture of it because it will go away.
