New 550 or Used 55?

Guys I finally got the green light to get my CLS

Question is New CLS550 or Used CLS55?

God I've always wanted an AMG, but a brand new car tempting, so what do you guys think?

Drive both, the answer should be clear when you're done

If it's not, get the 55

if you plan to mod.. CLS55

if you want the looks and some speed.. the CLS550

The 5.5K motor is great, but as smooth as a NA engine. Heat really hurts performance and its hard to enjoy the full power at times. (you can say too much power !)

7sp auto probably better than the old 5 spd.

The biggest difference in power will be on the freeway.

Simple answer.
AMG. Used is just fine. Go with the 55

But drive both and make your own decision.
The 7 Speed is nice. New is nice.

But the AMG goodies and the Supercharger. Yee Ha.
The seat feel and the exhaust note will make the decision for you.
Plus the depreciation curve will already have taken the hit
by first owner.......

Congrats outtadaloop.... im in the same boat as you... got the green light for the CLS,... have been contemplating leasing a new cls63 and paying the 30K depreciation over 3 years... or get a used cls55 (which looks almost identical, and is mod-friendly)...

am basically worried about how "rough" a previous owner might have driven the 55.. and also the never ending question about the 7speed vs 5speed... my wife drives an 06 slk350, and the 7 speed transmission in her car is great...

Go for the 55! Much more car for the money, and you won't lose your *** as badly when it's time to sell.

The AMG 55 is more of the performance car, and is frankly a great buy on theused market. Plus the 55K motor is a great engine to do some tuning on. I know that our clients love the results.

My SL55 with some simple ECU work and filters is an animal, and derestricted I have seen 202mph! These are great cars!

that was my dilemma only wanted white. but hell, i got the 55 for way less than a brand new 550 with AMG pkg with less miles than an average lease... i compromised on color but when i mash the pedal, i get over it fast...literally

I would sacrifice the color and get a clean 55. Evertime I drive my 55, its still scares the crap out of me.

55 in a heartbeat. 550 may have the nice new car smell, but after a few months, you'll regret not going for a 55/63. Do the right thing! get a 55!

55 hands down. the torque should be enough for you to make a decision. I still have that smirk on my face every time I get behind the wheel.

Can't go wrong picking an AMG

I'm sure you can find a well kept & low mileage CLS 55 in pretty much any color if you look hard enough (I did)

I doubt anyone would try to persuade you with a reason not to buy the better performing platform if it is available to you. While the acceleration & torque of these cars can be intoxicating, I've always chosen performance enhanced versions (AMG, M, SVT, etc) of all my previous cars with handling in mind.

In the event of needing to say make an emergency manuver, its probably redundant to point this out, but you'll be more likely to avoid a collison in the version of a car with the performance suspension.

As mentioned, the original owner ate the depreciation & the AMG will hold its value better in the long run. So what do you have to lose ? Mine still had that "new car" feel at 9K miles when I found it. You can buy that "new car scent" in a spray bottle if you want also (just kidding)

CLS55.

Why buy the 550 and then try to make it look like an "AMG" later?

Just like all the bmw 3 series with "m badges"

i'm saying he always wanted an AMG. Get it and dont look back.

Once you get locked into an 550 all of the things you wanted in the amg are expensive to get done. Performance, looks wings kits, exhaust, wheels.

get the amg if it's what you always wanted. Don't try to make the 550 what you wanted in the first place.

Guys, I test drove a White 55 this past weekend and the thing is a beast! It was so solid feeling that it didn't "feel" like I was hauling *** (even though I was)

Anyways the dealer wanted 83K for it with 12K miles...I guess the white color commands a premium?

I made him an offer and left my business card with him to think about it. We'll see what happens!

I am glad you are leaning towards the 55, if you get the 550 the whole time you will regret it. Find a white one on autotrader or ebay, take your time, you will find one.
