Nitrogen vs. Standard Air

Hey guys,

Quick question for anyone in the know. I found out I had a slow leak in one of my tires and discovered it was from a pothole that also caused a small dent in one of my rims. $450 for one new tire (Pirelli P Zero 295/25-21”)!!!!

Anyway, the guy at the shop told me that putting Nitrogen in the tires will prevent pressure loss. He was suggesting that the if my pressure was low and I hit a pothole it may have contributed to the dent and tire damage. The shop doesn't do it so I know he's not trying to sell me anything.

Any comments or experience with this guys?

Oh yeah, supposedly Costco does nitrogen for free!

i dont have nitrogen in my tires, but yes, it does prevent leaks and doesnt change psi when the temperature changes.

Supposedly, nitrogen will hold the same PSI longer than just air. It is not affected by outside temp. I am not sure if it eventaully leaks or not.

I've had nitrogen in my tires for over a year and the pressure is still the same. I check them every couple of months and I've never had to add air.

I have it in mine, and I like it. It fluctuates a lot less than oxygen, which is nice. You don't have to worry about filling your tires when it gets cold outside.

I'm gonna look into this, but then again I'm going to have to flatten my tires in order to fill 'em back up.

A lot of paces do it now. You should be able to have them deflated and refilled for $20 or so. I think it's a good pend, especially if you have low profile tires that can really be affected by being a few lbs low.

Makes sense, Nitrogen Molecules are bigger right? So they wouldn't leak out of the same size hole that just plain air would leak out of. I wonder though if your tires will be heavier after. Hmmm, I'm gonna use Helium
