I have had personal experience with an '05 SL55 and was utterly unimpressed by the quality. Yes it is an extremely pimp ride, but I believe the CLS is a better built and designed car from the ground up.

This is interesting to me because I faced the same decision but with an '09 SL63 vs an '09 CLS63 and because I spend most of the year in South Florida, though lately on the west coast, not the east where I lived all my life.
From November thru April the weather in So. Fla. is so nice that you can take the top down almost daily. Score one in favor of the SL.
However, you'll never be able to have guests enjoy your ride other than your significant other beside you. Score on for the 4-door, 4-seater CLS.
If I were you I'd weigh both those considerations against each other to see which is more important to you: open top or more interior room.
I chose the CLS but that's because my wife has an '06 Jag XKR convertible so whenever I want to go top down, I have a convertible waiting for me to use it as she mostly drives the SUV. I'll be trading in my convertible '06 Corvette for my CLS but if I didn't have another convertible in the garage to choose on a nice day, I'd definitely have picked the SL.
Good luck with your choice and keep us informed what you ultimately decide!

hey,
interesting thread. I have both an 06 cls55 and an 06 sl55. My experience is that they are both very great cars, both well made and fast. the question in which car to drive comes down to:
1. comfort, there is no doubt the cls is a more comfortable ride (smoother ride, don't have to worry about hitting every hill although you can raise the car when needed...)
2. size (you can't go to the golf course in the sl55 unless you use those small dinky bags... won't fit the tour bags. the trunk is quite large with the top up, but w/ the top down the trunk becomes much tinier.) then again... the trunk is much bigger than my crossfire which barely fits a practice bag...
3. passengers (since you're single, the question is if you go to a club or bar with a guy friend, how are you going to bring home the honeys without leaving your friend at the club?) i'm married so this doesn't really apply...
4. is this your only car? if so, the cls is just more practical, much more space to bring things home from the store and to pick up people, things... I drive the sl maybe like 5 times a month and only in nice weather. i've only been to florida once but I would imagine the weather's pretty nice all year round so i guess that's not such a big factor there.
5. the WOW factor. you know when you go to a club or you're driving down the street and you see this hot chick and think, damn i'd hit that. (hope the wife isn't reading!) well, the SL definitely has more of a WOW factor... it's sexy and fast as hell. but then most people will look at you and think, playa~~~ in the cls, you become more of a refined... playa.
if you're a speed racer, go for the SL all the way... also it definitely is more of a head turner than the sl because you WILL be seen in it, especially with the top down. i got it in silver, but in retrospect I should've go tthe black which is much more hot when maintained properly.
if you're looking for a nice smooth ride which is sophisticated yet sexy, get the cls all the way.
hope this helps~~~

Thanks guys i realy appreciate all the input!!!
I am still up in the air
What year are the changing the body on the SL When will be the next CLS body change..?
Preformance wise, is the SL really that much more fun to drive
I have a couple of Sportbikes so I appreciate acceleration...is the difference between the two that large/noticable.
I really want a brushed aluminum or carbon fiber interior trim...do any of them have it stock...or do i need to buy and aftermarket kit? Who's makes the hottest one..?
Always wanted a convertable but i can't deny the sexyness of the CLS!
Again thank you all for your time and input!
Will keep you guys posted on my purchase!

Its a choice I had to go through and i chose the CLS... its just a more practical car... Sporty yet comfortable to drive on a daily basis. You can't go wrong with either one, but if its going to be a daily driver, I'd say the CLS is the way to go..
