Center Channel Speaker Toasted...
Center speaker just started crackling away this afternoon. I searched the forum and although I found some info regrading it, nothing really solid in terms of anyone upgrading it...
With that said, has anyone ventured into swapping their center channel out? I found one post on another forum talking about a 2.5" replacement, while another referred to a possible 4" replacement...
Any advice, info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Are you just looking for upgrade? I called Crutchfield when mine went out and they said they didn't have any direct replacements.

the stock is about 75mm, but mounting depth is small: about 4cm
just, don't put any midrange because this center speaker is a "Full range" even if its real range is obviously limited by its size ..
I found this good replacement option HL70 by Hertz/Audison
... me its not enough, so we are trying to fit a 4" woofer + separate tweeter
but its not easy and this is why we need now remove the whole dash

Good stuff! Hey Dyno, how did you go about getting to the center channel speaker? Does the grill just pop off?

yes, just pull up
after searching a lot I think that Hertz full range 200- 14000Hz, 100Watt is the best option you can find because there's really no additional room available
.. and performancewise no comparison with the stock thing
... should you need to compliment the upgrade with tweeters from AMG E02
option, maybe I can give you mines

Is this a direct swap? Does this speaker need more power driving it or will it sound good with the stock system?

... you could have that problem only when replacing a big aftermarket Sub
we have one but I didn't go in detail because it seemed to me a very easy fit and on the othe rhand I wanted a bigger and stronger bass ..
I'll ask my installer to test fit it for you into the housing in my car till it is open

Thank you for the advice; mine too is doing the crackle thing. Not all the time, though; sometimes if I turn off the audio for a while and then back on later it doesn't do it. I'll try to find a supplier here and fix it your way.

My center is doing the same thing...... Im driving all my Alpine component speakers with an Apline PDX5.... The only speaker I left alone was the center channel. Yes my installer didnt seem to think fancy center channels are a reall necessity. I think I will upgrade tho as now it needs replacement. Thanks for the good info.....

I think my speaker is in good condition, and I'll give it to you for free if you want it. Take a look at this price list first. This speaker should cost no more than $30, and you would get a warranty on it as well. Check out this price list. The speaker is #6.

I was told that prices fluctuate on these parts but wow! That's a big jump in price. I obtained this part list for both the 55 and 500 back in 06 and the prices are still very similar to the list.

Heh, make sure that the impedance and sensitivity are the same.
Impedance could be 4 or 6 or 8 ohms. If you take out a 4 ohm and replace
it with the same sensitivity but 6 ohm it will draw less current from the
amp and will give less out put.
Also make sure it's the same sensitivity i.e 1 watt produces 80db.
However if you have ability to adjust it's not so important.
Lastly if your one is 8 ohms and you want to fit a 4 ohm or lower make sure
your amp will drive 4 ohms without cooking itself.

I replaced mine with a Kicker. Its pretty small and fit perfectly. The factory center is only glued in the cone area. Between the excessive dash heat and the extra power the cone came apart and began flapping which causes the weird vibration sound.

which speaker did you use? is there a model number? did it require any modification to fit in? is it the same ohm's?
