2006 CLS55 AMG vs 2010 Jaguar XF Premium Luxury

Hi,

I'm debating between an used CLS55 AMG and a brand new Jaguar XF.

CLS55 AMG has almost 100 more bhp than the XF but it's used and 4-year old. The Jaguar is new but it's less handsome than a black CLS.

How reliable is the CLS? Would a 4-year old car be reasonably new? I don't want to spend so much money to get a beat-up used car when I can get a sparkling new vehicle.

Thanks.

Considering pre-owned 06 CLS55's are going for on avg around $40K (well equipped with relatively low miles), there's a significant price difference between the two cars you're looking at.

The XF premium edition starts at $57K. If you start adding even the simplest of options, realistically you're probably looking at a price tag closer to $60K for the Jag. Before we even get to the performance or aesthetic aspects, there's a good $17K-$20K between the two cars!

Performance wise, there's really no comparison. CLS wins hand down. Aesthetically, and call me bias, but I'll have to vote for the CLS once again.

Last but not least, reliability wise... Naturally, and regardless of the car in question, everyone is worried about reliability when they purchase a pre-owned vehicle, but if you do the proper due diligence and check into the vehicles history as well as have it privately inspected, you should have a wealth of info from which that you can base a decision on.

A well maintained and looked after 06 CLS55, with avg to normal use, shouldn't give you anymore problems than what you would expect from a brand new Jag. Your maintenance schedule with the CLS may be a bit more extensive, but that goes with the fact that the cars 4 years old.

Warranty wise, well the brand new Jag will win this territory unless you opt for some sort of third party extended warranty for the CLS.

Just my thoughts on the subject matter...

CLS
Go with a CLS and buy from a Mercedes dealer that can offer you a year CPO bumper to bumper and get them to throw in another year. That's what I did. It's worth the few extra bucks to buy from a Mercedes dealer.

Of course that's just my opinion. I think I would still be a little nervous driving a CLS in the manner it is supposed to be driven knowing I had an aftermarket warranty. Not saying they don't pay, but have heard one too many horror stories about a major repair that comes up and getting denied over small print. Heck, I bumped my rear view mirror the other day so that it was hanging down a bit by it's bracket. Drove into the closest dealer to me, they took the car in and fixed it on the spot. Even though it only took a half hour total in and out they even offered me a courtesy car. Nothing better as far as I'm concerned than a CPO car.

Can't offer any personal opinions on the jag since I have never even driven one but the CLS just slams it in the looks dept alone not to mention performance. Good luck!

Hi guys,

I live in Canada so the price of a 06 CLS55 AMG is similar to a brand new Jag.

A new CLS63 runs about $120k cad here = $115k USD

My love goes to the black CLS55 or 63 AMG completed with black rims and four exhausts

Are there any preowned XFR's yet? The performance difference between the two cars you are looking at is considerable. Another possibility is looking at a preowned 09 XF supercharged. I was considering that, but again the performance difference even between the supercharged and the CLS63 or CLS55 is considerable.

That's a bummer.

What about coming over the border and purchasing one? I know some guys in Canada are too deep in the woods for that to make sense but we were talking about it in another thread a couple of weeks back.

CLS55
CPO is like a new car without the gas guzzler tax, well in Cali.
Jags are nice, esp the one you are looking into, but the CLS wins, purely the 4 door sports car, Porsche comes close with their Panemera but still looks like a station wagon.

There are plenty pre-owned XFs out there now...and if you can wait until late Spring there will be more as some of the XFs owners trade up for the XFR...both are great looking cars...food for thought...the CLS is at the end of it's cycle and there will be a new body style coming within the next 12 months...the XF will be the same for at least another 3 yrs.

mercedes 2011 CLS550 with AMG package
GREAT question, I am considering the same cars. The jag has a very aggressive lease program so you could lease a jag and have no issues BUT not as sexy. Especially since most of the women in my hood drives them

I have several months before my daily driver is up on its lease. I am even considering a porsche 911 2005 or 06.

I currently have a couple of benz's
- wifeys s550 and my e350

I take my car to a shop that does only mercedes for all my maint. and he highly recommends the CLS 55 even over the CLS 63. He told me that the CLS 55 are bullet proof and are GREAT cars. Just FYI

I currently drive an 06 CLS320 cdi and am considering a 05/06 CLS 55 or a 05 911 C2S .

Im guessing brakes/suspension bushes and Electrics would be my areas of concern for the AMG.

I know the P-cars are different but price is very close to the CLS.

I love the looks of the CLS and want a V8 before I die but the Porsche is soo tempting.

I will buy in the next few months and then start dreaming about GTRs

Anyway, Go for a test drive and let your heart decide

Good Luck
