K&N Air Filters HELP!!

My car was feeling a little slow, so i decided to clean my air filters.

While I was trying to clean my K&N Air Filters when I discovered 1 of the torx screws in the air box was rounded...all the textures where star imprint on the top of the screw is are stripped off...so when I try and take it out, the screw driver just slides around

My question are:
1. how do I remove a stripped screw
2. how often should I clean the air filters?

Unless you can get a pair of vice grips around it, your best be is probably to take a 1/4" titanium bit and just drill the head off. Then, remove the cover, and grip the shaft (I assume that you know how to do this) with the vice grips and remove it (ouch!).

As far as time between K&N cleanings, I clean mine every 2k miles or so. They get dirty pretty fast, and the cleaning/re-oiling is pretty easy (just buy the K&N recharge kit).

I would clean the box every 10000 miles. about the screw you can go to Osh or home depot and ask them where you can get some easy out, they are different size drill bits that turn counter clock wise, but dont use a drill when using it just grab a small cresent wrench and start turning the stripped screwwith it, if the hole is to big you need to dill it with a small bit just enough to have the easy out to bite. good luck

I definitely would not wait 10K miles. Mine was very brown at 3k. When I washed it with the solvent/soap that comes with the recharge kit, the rinse water was dark brown.

I have encountered yet another problem...since the screws are worn, I can no longer use them

however, MB dealerships dont sell the screws seperately either! theres no part number for them...rather, mbusa sells them as apart of the airbox assembly, which is 160!!!

i've look at osh, home depot, and various other places...the best match I could find for the screw doesnt have a dull tip...is this still ok?

I would say that, as long as the new screws are not longer than the old ones, you are fine.

BTW, what the hell are you doing to those screws?

Sounds like you need to spend less time on the road, and more time at home watching Bob Villa.

So, you've learned your lesson:

"Never screw at 5:00 AM just because you can't sleep."

So the stock filter is K&N and it can be cleaned with K&N recharge kit (where do I buy this thing)?

the stock filter is NOT k&n, but you can buy the re-charger cleaner kit at pep-boys, kragens, or any car supply store. it consists of an airesole can and a plastic spray bottle.
