Anyone surprised when you tell 'em "it's a V8"?

C55 AMG, 135i, 911 GT3, GLE43 AMG
You too should let this go. The C55's performance numbers are superior to the C32 in most tests in most magazines. It's slightly faster from stop, and much faster from a roll (5-60mph). The C55's times around a track like the ring are so much faster than the C32 that the difference can't all be attributed to driver difference or track temperature. (check my post #39 on this thread).
This makes sense. It's called progress. Mercedes AMG revised the suspension/steering/chassis/ESP in the 2005 C55 compared to the C32. I don't have to tell you about the engine. It is much closer in performance to the M3 dynamically, but still lacks the BMW "feel" when at the cornering limits.

Sorry to derail the conversation, but I wanted to chime in on the V8 factor. My experience is less from conversation and more from sound. If I tell people it has a V8, responses are typically, "oh, that's cool I guess." I guess their mentality, and rightfully so is, "yeah, so does a Crown Vic."
Now, when people see me get into what in their eyes is just a clean C-class with nice wheels, and then hear that "VROOM, burble burble burble", they look at the car like it's some kind of bastage child from a one-nighter between a C230K and a Vette.
Keep in mind that a lot of people don't understand what the AMG badge really means. Unfortunately (especially in my demographic) it's more of a fashion badge for poseurs. Might as well have LV insignias all over it.

Great point JPOG about people not knowing what AMG actually means as far as performance. Other than my car enthuasist buddies, not one person I talk to has known what it is. Unfortunately, the best way to explain it to them is to say it is like the M series of BMW - then they get it.
People always ask me if my C32 has a V8 because of the acceleration (even though it has the V6 right on the car!)
And no C32 owner should be insulted if someone says the C55 is a faster/better/quicker/better handling car. They are 2 different cars with different engines. I've never driven a C55, but if it isn't faster/more improved than the C32, then MB made a mistake by replacing the C32.

To me it was a move very similar to the one Audi made. Go from FI on a smaller engine to a NA V8. Lots of people lamented the end of the biturbo, because they were so dang easy to mod. Same goes with the C32. I was on the fence for that reason. C32; less money, generally just as fast stock (give or take .0000327 sec), and after $12.50 you have 480 rwhp. C55; rumble rumble rumble. Yeah, I threw the exaggerations in to keep the pot stirred.
I like both cars. Just different formulas for the same ultimate outcome. Class-leading performance (C&D article with M3 and RS4!!), class-leading luxury, and reliability greater than either the BMW (ask me about the '05 M3 I just traded in on the C55) or Audi. Can't lose with either three-pointed star, blown or not.
