Angry Disappointing Drag Race Times

Jay55 and I decided to head out to Qualcomm stadium tonight for some 1/8th mile drag racing. We both got some pretty disappointing times due to the inability to hook up tractionwise. There was an SL65 there and he also made a comment about ****ty track conditions so I guess we weren't the only ones complaining tonight.

Jay has some video footage that he'll upload soon but he's waiting to run a GTO right now. I left early because no matter what I tried my tires would either go up in smoke or ESP would cut the power to the car. I even tried launching in Comfort mode (2nd gear) and I still managed to break loose. It was that bad. After about 10 runs with little improvement I decided to call it quits. All runs were made with my 19" BBS wheels with the tires at 25psi.

Anyway here are the best 2 slips I could manage tonight:

Reaction: 0.569 0.651
60 Ft: 2.467 2.342
ET: 9.387 9.291
MPH: 80.21 79.64

It's all in the 60 ft. With a good launch you could have a 1.9 time which would carry you to 8.80. That's about right for a C55. And hey, practice is fun.

Love the white, by the way.

Unfortunately the 1.9 60ft's won't happen at this track or with these tires. I'm just really frustrated that no matter what I tried there was zero/minimal improvement. Either I was too slow off the line or gave it too much gas and lit up the tires. Argh! Time to get an LSD and drag radials. I'm sure my -2.3 degree camber in the rear doesn't help with traction either.

I like your blacked out look. It's like the complete opposite of mine. I chose bright white and you're blacked out. Looking good regardless.

wish I could have been there to see how my C55 would do. I used to go every once in a while with my WRX. 1.85 60 foot with 8.5 trap time at 83-84 mph. After a few times with the same time, I stopped going.

Thanks for the words. I had a white '05 M3, and wanted to go in a different direction. Here's a pic of the ///M.

We're definitely going again. There is no way we're going to let our times stand as crappy as they are. Maybe we can have an MBWorld night out there after your car is fixed. I know Genechien would be interested. The AWD cars didn't seem like they had any issues with traction (typical). I ran an S4 and he killed me with a 1.85 60ft.

I love the white M3's. That would have been my choice of color had I gone that route. How do the two cars compare?

The ///M was a bit rougher around the edges, handling a bit sharper, a couple of ticks slower. More importantly, it lived in the shop. Now I'm back to Benz.

To get back OT, I ran a 8.80 1/8 in the ///M. No times on the C55.

I had a chance to run an M3 tonight but couldn't get lined up with it. I think it's better that I didn't since I would have lost anyway.

If you guys are interested here's the video that Jay taped last night. I'm in one of the races but I ran a ****ty 9.8. That was the run where I used 2nd gear to launch instead.

There are 2 tracks in San Diego and they're both 1/8th mile. Qualcomm is one of them and Barona Drag Strip is the other. For more info on the Qualcomm events please click here. Barona Drags click here. If you go my advice is to get there at least 90 minutes early. That way you're in front of the tech line and can get almost 8 runs in before the rest of the people get through.

It's official. We're going again this Friday, April 7, assuming it doesn't rain. I got my drag radials today so I'm ready to do this! Come on MBworld'ers, come out and represent.

We're going out there early because the tech line can get pretty long. Come out and join us if you have nothing to do Friday.

Your car has really nice tasteful mods - you just need to hook up! I bet that even the drag radials will not be sufficient, with that much torque on tap. Oh - and you are probably already doing this, but steer around the bleach trap unless the drag tires have no tread - otherwise it will hurt your times.

I was steering around the burnout box to begin with but still didn't help so I tried burning out to see if it helped. Negative. I hope the DR's with low tire pressure will at least get me down in the 2.0 range.

There are better days in drag racing much like any other sport.. I agree with the slicks and recommend , greenfilters, removed resonator, turning ESP completely off w/ A/C, octane booster fluid w/ 1/4 tank of gas,as well all for less than $100. With those + slicks I can see you pulling off an 8.3-8.5 range. Then you could go pkg 2 and get into low 7s. S/C and be in high 5-6 maybe!! The possibilities are endless with AMG!
