70 C / 160 F thermostat
Hi Folks:
I've been working on a 70c / 160 f replacement thermostat . So far it will fit a C-55 with a M-113 engine , The factory piece is 87 c / 189 f
Opinions , is it needed? Thanks ___PTE___

i am wondering if it will trigger a check engine light? i would like to do this as well for the C32, but don't know if it will work without the computer freaking out because it never gets to that temperature anymore...

First, it's going to suck in winter time as the car will have a hard time maintaining temperature. Been-there, done-that with other low-temp thermostat applications.
Second, the ECU calibration needs to be adjusted so the car doesn't get stuck in "cold-start" mode (for lack of a better description) and run rich as heck thinking it still needs to warm up.
If you can overcome these obstacles (mainly the second one) it could prove a very worthwhile, and cost-effective mod.

PTE made one for me so I have been able to data log and get some feed back. The car idles at about 167-173 with the ac on and 188 to 192 ac off.
When cruising ac on or off, the temp drops to 165. According to my data logger cold start mode turns off at about 130-140 degrees. The o2 sensor voltage and fuel trim changes around there and looks identical to factory thermostat. Big thumbs up from me so far.

Don't I wish it was that easly. It is a different return spring . Different vernathern center & valve. Plus some machining to get it all to fit. I do install a air bleed hole in the alum housing.

The stock OEM is 87 C / 189 , the engine runs about 205 F . In traffic it really gets sluggish on a hot day here in Florida. H/P gain on cold or mild day not much , but on a hot day, you have enough reserve , that the motor runs more consentant, from stop light to stop light.
No big hp claims

Thanks PTE. Part number for a E-55 Compressor thermostat assy 113-203-02-75 $78.90
Part Number for a Clk -C 5.5 N/A
thermostat assy 112-203-02-75 $25.00
The only difference I can measure is the addition. bend & lenght in the neck to clear the compressor belt and $54.00?? . For the compressor one. left in the picture

Back From the Grave??
Well this is what Happened. It took 6 weeks to get one for a C-32 , from the other side of the BLACK FOREST, By Stuttgart?? Germany. I finally Got it. Modded it . Sent it out . Wrote the Guy about 3 weeks , , He has decided to wait . Cold weather has set in ,In North Georga. I really didn't want put many out there. Without testing. I do not have excess to a C/SLK -32 . for testing. So I ordered another one ,3 weeks ago. I would rather know that it works , than disappoint a bunch of you.

PTE,
Would you be able to use a thermostat from a C320 and modify that one for my C32 motor? I have my old C320 motor sitting in the shop, and the thermostat housing looks the same. It rarely gets very cold in California...
