Leaving the family (maybe)

I need more room boys and found a nice '05 x5 4.8is in LeMans Blue, fully loaded. Free maintenance, etc...

What do you think?

The X5 4.8is is a great SAV very good acceleration for what it is and louder stock exhaust then the C55. I have one and while I do drive it much more then my C55 the performance of the two don't even come close. The C55 would be gone by the time the X5 got into third gear. If I were to pick between the two I would keep my C55. The only reason I drive the 4.8is more is to keep miles off my C55. If your capable of owning both I would do that.

2005 C55
Good choice with the 4.8, but why not change to an E55? More space and much faster than a 4.8 X5.
Good luck anyways.

I do understand your need for space but dont forget than an X5 is not that big of an SUV. Its almost a cute ute type of SUV. Plus its not all that quick being that its no feather weight. Dont get me wrong its a great car but I just think a Cayanne Turbo used would be a more fun car for you and it has the ability to be pretty quick with a GIAC ECU upgrade.

Ever think of waiting for a ML63? Its the king of speed, grace, sapce and handing. BUt that car could easliy be out of your budget. Sadly its not as cheap as the old ML55.

ML63 is out of budget--can't stand the look of the P car.

Well the Cayanne Turbo is $100K plus so I would say that would be out of the budget as well.

Anyway, the 4.8 X5 is plenty quick. Its nothing like a 3.0 or 4.4 so those can not be used as a comparison and if unless you've driven one I wouldn't comment on that. The 4.8 accelerates pretty hard from a stop with a very loud growl and it just seems to pick up speed at a faster rate as it moves up to 2nd and 3rd gears. It just doesn't take off like a C55 does and it doesn't feel as quick at speeds above 120mph as it did at low speeds.

I'd bet the usable interior space in an E-class is more than in the BMW X5. I recently read that the X3 has more space than the X5!

Get a used E55. You already have an SUV in the household. You get the best of both worlds with the E55, it's big enough to haul the family around & luxiurious enough to go out in the evening with the wifey. Not to mention you'll have one of the fastest sedans in the world, and that ain't bad.

Just saw a used 2004 E55 for sale at EuroMotorCars, Bethesda, MD. Not cheap, but it only has 29,000 miles on it.

I vote E55. That BMW will be a MASSIVE waste of gas as well and I promise there is more usable room in the E55 vs. the X5. The X5 gains you cargo space, but passenger space is no comparison to a nice sized sedan like the E-Class.

2006 BMW X5 4.8is and 2005 C55 AMG
Yeah since you have a SUV already I would go for a used E55. On the X5 side though it is being redesigned for 2007 and will have a larger cabin. Also the 4.8 is becoming a 5.0 with 380hp and there maybe a X5 M with the 500hp V10 engine.

Yeah, but he'd still have a BMW. Friends don't let friends drive BMW's.

Thanks for the responses guys. Unfortunately, not in the cards. I have been working the X5 and a 2004 E55 today. The trade-in for my car with around 18K miles is ~ $34-$35K. I was looking at getting $40K from the dealer. I need to sell it privately. Ouch, a nice depreciation hit, but I told te board last month tat the trade in auction was mid $30s.
